Barzal would holdout.
He is secretly crushed by Detroit's dumping of contracts. As while he is saying all the right things about re-signing on Long Island just like John Tavares did--he intends to pull a Tavares. Barzal looks around that NYI team and sees the void of young talent and the downward trajectory of the NYI franchise with puzzling coaching decisions that have been made.
You know he has one foot out the door and a team like Detroit that has 8M in cap room (and an additional 8M coming off the books in the summer between Pius Suter, Oskar Sundqvist, and Adam Erne) with a talented young core missing basically a #1 centre has to look awful appealing. If Fabbri is forced to medically retire as now both his knees have undergone repairs (MCL's I think) the cap room jumps to $12M.
