Should have done this midseason If he was still performing. Too much risk for that salary and term based on a single years production. It's worth the extra 750k/yr it might have cost to make sure he's for real.

A 7x7 after one great year? Are you sure about this Kevyn Adams?

This is just such a high risk medium reward contract. He's had one good year and has been absolute garbage the rest!

Pretty big contract, if he keeps up his play from last year it'll be great, if not then it's an overpayment.

High risk, high reward. Gonna have to check in on this one in three years.

I’m more just like…y’all couldn’t drop the extra $1 to make it an even 50? 😂

Skinner's contract belonged to the previous GM ...

I'm obviously aware of that, given "This was Adam's first big/long term contract".................. however, it's the same team, so he is obviously aware of Skinner's contract and what happened, hence my comment

They couldn't just agree to $50M even? Had to be a buck short?

Is that a win for Buffalo that they saved the dollar?

Quoting: mvp13
Probably a numbers thing. 7 years, 7.14million. Lotta 7s in there. You see it other times, too. Tage and Kevyn are hoping for some good luck, and they will need it

Quoting: Random2152
Pretty sure it is 50 mil on the nose, just CF averaging it since 50/7 is an ugly number until they get the full contract details. Come back in a day or 2 and it'll say 50 even.

Like Hayes contract for example

Yes, it's because 50 doesn't divide by 7 well. See Kyle Connor's contract too. The total cap hit shows up as $1 off, but the actual contract is $50 million

Maybe, maaaaybe (big maybe), he lives up to this contract, but he sure as sh*t won’t ever outplay it. I really like Kevyn Adams, but this was a horrid move

Madness. Give him a 1yr deal at 5-6, then extend if he's excelling. Crazy.

GMKA must have a lot of faith in Tage. This kind of money after one good year makes me nervous, on the other hand if he continues or dare I say even improve his game, Adam’s will look like a genius (Especially when Cap increases) No risk no reward I guess. If he progresses or even stays around last years level he’d be a 9Mil player after a bridge so this could be a savings. I think he’s trying to find a way to keep the band together when their contracts are up (Dahlin, Power, Samuelson, Cousins, Kerbs, Middlestat)

I’ve always liked Thompson even when other Sabres buddies thought he was a bum but I could see his potential and lack of opportunities given to him. He did have his breakout year with more ice, I feel there is even room for him to improve (defence) I’d rather risk it on a kid then a declining UFA like Kadri. No offence meant to Kadri but my point is his best years are probably behind him not ahead of him like Thompson.

I think it’s a calculated risk signing, we’ll need 3 years to probably properly evaluate it.

like, it seems like, everyone is saying, this is a big risk medium reward deal. if thompson mimics this production for the remainder of his new contract, thats a good deal. if he falls off to even 50 points, then it becomes worse. i'll hold out on my vote until we get a better understanding

This is a huge risk - it's boom or bust. Tage Thompson just benefitted from a MASSIVE finishing season though.

This one is complicated. He had a break out year and it took a bit to get there. The lag in development is to be expected for players of his stature. He has the draft pedigree. My question is with all the moving parts in Buffalo are you underpaying a #1 C or overpaying a #2 C? You have Couzens and Mittlestat there too. I guess time will tell but a shorter term commitment would have been my play, but I'm just an armchair GM.

I feel like this is going to be like the Draisaitl contract back in 2017. Everytime I watched the Sabres Tage stood out for me. It's not like he was playing with elite players either. He's a unicorn player. One of the best shots in the NHL.

To be fair Draisaitl showed a lot more before signing his deal.

Quoting: CoraStorm
Mr Adams is playing the lottery on the 82.5 mil Sal Cap %% ??? .... If Mr Adams is right about Thompson, he just saved the company monies!!! It was signed under the 22-23 Sal Cap limit (82.5) ~~~ Remember Chiarelli and Draisaitl.

Honestly the best use of company monies wouldve been to let the arbitrator decide how much he's worth on a one year prove it deal and if he does back it up then you sign him long term. One good year, despite that one year being great, doesnt completely erase the previous 3 years of disappointment. On the flip side, another year of his increased production likely wouldnt have have added too many dollars to 7 years at 50m anyway... Just seems like a risk that Buffalo didnt necessarily have to take.

Why now? Is he really gonna improve substantially from last season? If he regresses, this contract will look terrible. If he scores 35G it'll look about right. If he scores 45+ I'll shut up.

Before last season, he was a 20-point player. That's it.
Was this his breakout season? If so, then Buffalo gets a win.
Does he return to normal? If so, this contract will sink Buffalo for the next seven years.

Even somewhere in the middle is too much risk. I voted no.

That's cap hit, which is averaged across the years (which is what CF was doing here before details came out). The actual money paid is a few columns over and says the actual number - 50.

Remember, that cap hit is a totally fake and made up number that doesn't actually exist. The real contract is in the salary columns.

To be fair Draisaitl only had one full season with McDavid before signing his contract. But Edmonton was really devoid of talent outside of Eberle and Draisaitl signed in his D+3 season vs Thompson in his D+6 season.. Take is he signed his deal in 2017 but hes only two years older than Tage lol. All that to say there really is no comparison to be made at all for player or contract.
