Since he’ll never be the guy to deliver the thundering hit, his defensive style is way more subtle and technical. He’s just great at getting the puck back.

Hughes also has elite hockey IQ and superior edge work. It was even evident when he was playing for U of Michigan. He was right under the Red Wings nose and we still passed. ☹️

But I'm over it. No really. I am.

I think someone I find insane is I believe Hughes has the highest PPG out of anyone in that draft class? (With a minimum of three games)

Now VAN just needs five more of him.

My version of this is McAvoy over Juolevi

I recall watching Hughes play for Team USA in the World championship right before the draft. Blashill was head coach. He had to see what I saw. I guess Kenny didn't agree. But it seemed like Hughes had the puck the entire time. I'd watched Bouchard and Dobson play for Team Canada and was impressed by both. I thought Dobson had to put on some muscle. And he did. But Hughes was the real deal from the start. I have no problem as a Red Wings fan saying we screwed that pick royally.

But I'm over it. I really am! 🤣

McAvoy wouldve been sweet. Literally any other d man picked in the first round of the 2016 draft would have been better than Juolevi. We also still could've gotten Pettersson and Hughes as a young McAvoy wouldn't make us THAT much better. 2016 was a rough draft but at least Benning still got us Demko, Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, and Podkolzin. Still upset about us missing 2 first rounds in a row but hopefulyl we can get them back in a Miller trade

Its all about hindsight. tbh, if yall took Hughes and we got Zadina, nobody in Vancouver would be upset. He was projected way earlier and just happened to never hit his potential.

Not a defenceman that doesn't play defence. Unquestionably skilled player, who I will admit is getting better defensively, just not a fan of his play. He's going to be a stud for a long time as well I feel.

"Not a defenceman that doesn't play defence."

Guess you're still living in the 2020 bubble season? His defensive play has improved drastically compared to the COVID season. You can easily teach defence, but you cant teach Hughes' exceptional offensive talents. Even so, Hughes is still better defensively than those other players listed lmao

Zadina lit up the Q. Just like Mantha did. Mantha is still a good player. He just can't stay healthy. I do recall a few talking heads saying Zadina was better than Svechnikov before that draft. These so called experts are never held accountable for their "opinions."

Zadina definitely looked like he was going to be picked early. None of us have any control whether or not a player reaches their projected potential and thats just how it is sometimes.

Honestly that's good to hear, I didn't like his play that much. I'll make sure to watch him more now.

Imo the thing Hughes does best isn’t necessarily scoring points or playing good positionally or keeping good gap controll (though he is pretty good at those things too) but instead his best attribute is his ability to exit the zone with possession. Watch any game of his and there will be 5-10 times we avoids the forchecker and start the play with possession that will lead to a zone entry at the other end

I remember Jim Sandlak. 6'4 220 pounds. Drafted 4th overall by Vancouver. Cam Neely was 6'1 185 pounds. Drafted 9th overall by Vancouver. One became a star. One didn't. You never know.

Hughes controls the game. Seider does too. Just in a different way.
