Partially because KK has shown out a little better than Dach to this point in his career, partially because Carolina paid a pretty hefty acquisition cost for KK (you might know something about that) and I think they'd want to recoup some of that value if they moved on from him.

In a tight cap world, CAR adds - his contract is just a big question mark at this point.

I think MTL adds a bit. Believe KK has shown slightly more but has had more opportunity to show. This seems pretty close though and both players are going to be disappointing based on their draft slots but hopefully will turn into quality middle 6 Cs.

Carolina adds, MTL is done with KK so you'll have to pay us to take him AND send you a replacement. Just saying

Carolina got KK for the equivalent of a 1st and a 3rd. MTL got Dach for the same thing but higher quality ones. Dach is cheaper but KK has proven a little more. I don't think either team adds anything. Cap space is king and KK has not proven a whole lot more than Dach at this point and Dach is 1 year younger thus has 1 year of potential that we already know KK about. If Dach scores 40 points this year, he'd be ahead of where KK is right now and would be cheaper. That unknown is also worth something.

Hmm I mean I guess its kind of pointless question then. Why would you add assets to players in a trade with no cap hits involved ? It would be like saying who adds between KK vs Dach but nothing of what they did in their career thus far matters. Only their cap hit..... Obviously Dach is cheaper so I guess that's better then right?

I think it would, as of now, give an unfair advantage to Dach because he is an RFA and will probably sign a bridge deal. KK already has his full deal.

But you said contracts aside? Whether they are RFA or UFA at the end of their contract is irrelevant. Not only that, KK is signed for 8 years so the RFA vs UFA thing doesn't really matter any more. Dach could be a UFA in technically 5 years if he wanted to. KK is guaranteed 8 more years till free agency.

Either way this whole debate is kind of pointless. Who is a better player right now? Probably KK. He's had some playoff success so that is worth something but picking two players with various amount of time in the league is like saying whose better right now : Connor McDavid or Connor Bedard ? One guy hasn't had a full chance to prove as much as the other yet so its an unfair comparison in that context so that is why cap hits and contracts are needed if you want to compare players in this way.
