Jones is still a bonified top pairing RHD. His cap hit might be a little higher than it should be, but it's not outrageous. The problem with Jones is that CHI gave up WAAAAAY too much in the trade and a rebuilding team really has no use for a player like him during a rebuild other than to help them hit the cap floor.

One more thing I just looked into and did the math on is that his contract is HEAVILY front loaded and the back half of his contract largely comes from signing bonuses, which ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE CALCULATION OF BUYOUT cost!!! EDIT: If his contract is bought out with four years left, the buyout cost will only be $866K for 8 years. The cap hit savings will still be high for a few years, but by then the ceiling will be significantly higher anyway.

That is the cost of a mid level prospect, and might even be right near the league minimum salary by that point. At that point he will be 31 years old, he will still be a player in the NHL for a while beyond that. So that barely factors into anything. Also, by then the cap ceiling will have gone up substantially, according to NHL execs. At which point, his contract will be more than palatable to any team in the league for a top 4 defenseman.

That's just a crazy take. He is like 1M to 500k overpaid at most.
If he had gone to Dallas last year (the runner up in the Jones sweepstakes) and they made the 1st/2nd round then this whole talk about how good he is would never exist. Jones was actually very good defensively this year but his offense very much fell in line with the rest of Chicago as a team

One analytical model from one season does not mean it is a good contract. I can easily point to a different model that suggests his total value is similar to OEL.

In fact, here is the comparison right here:

Jones is still a top pair caliber defenseman. They're paying him about 1 mill too much, but 8-10m is the going rate for players like him.

People LOVE to jump on a hate bandwagon as soon as a highly regarded player has a dip in play. it's like they forget what made him a great defenseman

I agree 1 season is not an end all decision, for example the year prior Jones was at a 3% WAR

Regardless of what any model says about Jones he is at the end of the day a legitimate #1 defenseman. He's played north of 25 minutes a night and in all situations for the last 4 seasons and is highly trusted against elite competition under every coach.

I like OEL too, I think in the right situation and with the right partner he is a very solid defenseman.

I like both defenseman. I think either of them at around $5 million AAV is good. But both have much higher cap hits than that and a LOT of term. It’s just not feasible to carry a player like Seth Jones on your team and still have a high end contender. Similar to Darnell nurse in Edmonton.

I just don't agree with that though. Jones is a very good hockey player that has happened to play for 2 very weak teams. Before he was traded to Chicago it was widely reported that Dallas was a frontrunner for him. Had they gotten him at a similar cost (15th OA + protected 1st + Dellandrea/Harley + 2nd for Jones + 32nd OA) this whole conversation of Jones' contract situation would likely not exist at all. Instead Dallas didn't get him and instead signed Sutter to a 4 year deal to play like a 3rd pair defenseman, then reversed into the first round of the playoffs

It's not an awful contract! Jones is a bona-fide top-pairing RD, which the market has put a pretty high cost on. It might not age super well, but when anyone is comparing it to, say, Makar's contract, nobody's contract is going to age well.

The problem is (1) like you said, he will forever be haunted by what CHI gave up to get him, particularly if even one of Sillinger/ Jiricek/ Boqvist turns into a stud; (2) his prime-value years are going to come while CHI is rebuilding; and, (3) that contract is buyout proof/ untradeable, unless Jones turns into the next un-aging Pavelski type (which, maybe! Circle around in six-seven years).

His contract is, frankly, probably what CBJ or any other team would be paying for him. The issue is just that it is awful for CHI to be paying for him right now. Bowman just had other ideas while he was trying to salvage his reputation on the way out the door.

I wouldn't say it is buyout proof. Again, the buyout cap hit may be high, but the actual buyout cost is pretty low, only around $866k after his 4th year. And he will only be 31 and should still be playing good hockey at that point. So, if a team at that point is in a rebuild and needs a low actual cost piece to help them hit the cap floor, he would be a no brainer.
