It was a limited sample size, but his offensive metrics looked decent last season compared to his previous NHL seasons. What made you think he was awful?

Ftr I don’t think Cholowski wins the 6D spot. It’s between him, Robin Salo and Sebastian Aho - but I think Mayfied would be a great partner for cholowski to limit his weaknesses

Watching him under a microscope in his games in DC, he reminded me of a cheaper Justin Schultz from last year. Decent enough offensively but failed to bring any sort of defense consistently, seemingly left his defensive partner back without help on numerous occasions, and seemed like he got quite flat-footed when play would exit the offensive zone. Perhaps I didn't get enough of a sample size but he failed to impress me outside of his first game or two in DC when he wasn't as awful as Carlson or Schultz. Perhaps someone like Mayfield can limit those weaknesses but I'm not sure he can cover for those deficiencies. I just worry that if he's even in the conversation for 6D, the back-end of the Isles D seems quite weak unless he's improved.

What I’ve heard is that he can move the puck well out of the defensive zone and He has above average vision/playmaking skills but he’s turnover prone in the Dzone and he’s terrible at Dzone retrievals. Mayfied can help with the retrievals which should allow him to play his game and make better decisions under pressure.

The isles have one of the best top 4 D cores in the league and Scott Mayfield is one of the better 3rd pair Dmen. The isles can afford to experiment with Cholowski, but I think more likely it’s Robin Salo or Sebastian Aho who wins the spot. Cholowski is on a 2 way deal.

Great deal for Ottawa, I mean just a 10/10 deal for a steadily growing team.

4th line probably looking like Motte-Gambrell-Watson, with Kelly and Kastelic breathing down their necks (I prefer Kastelic over Gambrell, but I think Gambrell might have the advantage right now). Should be an interesting camp. Nice way to make sure young guys have to earn their ice time (not a bad thing if it’s healthy and fair competition) and he’s a useful depth player who can return a pick in the worst case scenario that we suck again
