-Islanders don't need to clear cap, much less sacrifice a 1st to do so. They're $2.75M under the cap as we speak and there's really no one left out there to spend even *that* cap on, much less the $8M total they'd be under with this deal. Pass from NY.
-Feels like a huge overpay for Chych. Greig is a strong prospect, plus a pair of 1sts, a 2nd, and Brannstrom? Ottawa has the cap space to keep Zaitsev on and not add him to this deal to water down the value of their package. Grieg/1st/2nd should be a strong enough package to get the talks going.
-Not sure what Philly's cap situation looks like on Opening Night (is Ellis on LTIR?) but if they have the room they should keep JVR. He's overpaid for sure, but he's been a solid 20-25 goal type of guy and I'm sure you can get something small back at the deadline if he's playing up to that level and you retain him down to $3.5M. Not saying he's getting back a 1st, but I don't think he has to get dumped at the cost of a 1st on a team that *should* be rebuilding.
-Feels like a fair deal for Schmaltz, but I don't see the sense in adding Helm here. If you need to make the cap work for Colorado, I'd get back JT Compher - he's made redundant if they acquire Schmalts, he's on an expiring deal, and if you did this before training camp you could conceivably flip Compher out at the deadline.
-Vegas probably doesn't make this deal? I was pretty certain they acquired Weber for LTIR reasons, and they really don't have any reason to move him right now. I get why Arizona would value the Weber deal, but I can't see Vegas paying assets to move a contract they don't necessarily have to.
-Winnipeg isn't giving up a 2023 1st for Ghost when they already have Nate Schmidt, Neal Pionk, and Dylan DeMelo under contract next season. I think you can push for a deal like that at the deadline with full retention, but the Jets aren't the right target.
-Can't see Dallas paying this much to move Khudobin's expiring deal. I think he's LTIR eligible to start the season, no? And if not they should have the room to bury him in the AHL even after extending Oettinger & Robertson.
-I don't see Helm being worth this much at TDL. He's a bottom 6 guy without much production - I think Andrew Cogliano is a good comp from this year (over 35, affordable contract) and he only brought back a 5th rounder with 50% retention.
-Bjugstad falls under the same type of valuation, to me - he's been a 15-20 point guy the last couple seasons, so even with a cheap contract you're probably only getting back a 4th/5th unless he starts scoring again.
-Troy Stecher brought back a 7th rounder at the TDL last year. What has changed since then to make his value go up so drastically?
-Nick Ritchie did well to rebuild some of his value but I think he needs to maintain it over more than 24 games before a team like the Lightning would take on his deal at this cost.
