Description
Couture deal explanation

San Jose: A rebuilding team shouldn't be in a cap crunch. The Sharks haven't been that far out of the playoffs recently, but they should try to take a step back to replenish their prospect pool. The Burns trade was a start, but they still need to try to get rid of some of these massive contracts if they can. Couture is a great leader for the Sharks, but he's on a $8 million deal for 5 years that will look even worse when he's 38. They need flexibility, and they need top prospects. This deal does both for them.

Washington: Especially with the return Burns got, in reality a team probably won't pay this much, but Couture is still a top 6 center with term.
I think with Backstrom out long term, they'll be desperate for a 2c, especially if Strome struggles. They really want to win another cup with Ovi, and honestly with the forward depth they have, especially after this trade, that's possible. Maybe it's Lapierre if the Caps are attached to McMichael, but the point is going all in for a Cup right now, and worrying about later later. The cap will be an issue, but moving Eller and San Jose retaining will help. They can figure out the rest.

With all due respect, Reimer isn't worth a 2nd round pick like Matc Andre Fleury was.

They may be able to move Couture but he certainly won't be returning close to that

IMO Couture and his contract isn't worth it. Plus in the trade you have traded Eller who is a centre. Backstrom and the his length of time on LTIR is a big factor.

Could make the argument that with soooo much cap and term tied up in guys like Couture, Hertl and Karlsson that they should sacrifice some futures to really go for it.

Reimer has better numbers...

Anyway, Sharks-Wild goalie trades seem to be an annual tradition so I thought I'd continue it.

They haven't made the playoffs in 3 years. Just lost Burns for close to nothing.
I see what you're saying but I could see them last in the division this year, and again they have no cap space for major additions.

I get it, but Minnesota isn't in any position to be dealing another High Pick for a short term 1-2 years backup when we have wallstedt in Iowa.

Capitals say no to that. The contract is still too much for the Caps to take on, and you not would be able to get McMichael in this trade.

Not sure how Wallstedt is relevant. He's 19 and won't play in the NHL for several seasons. Reimer is a rental and will likely be retired by the time Wallstedt makes the NHL.

he will be to a team in a cap crunch who needs a reliable starter or a really good 1-B guy who is cheap. to me Vegas is the ideal land ing spot with Lehner out. but to get the 2nd the sharks will need to retain some of his salary. straight up it’s a 3rd and a 4th

Minnesota already has a backup from Ottawa and Marc Andre Fleury as a starter who they gave up a 2nd round pick for. Minnesota isn't difficult anything ti blocks wallstedt who they 1st round pick on. MIN also spend 2nd round pick on Fleury and doesn't need ti spend a 2nd round pick on a person to challenge their backup .

Fleury and Gustavsson won't cut it for a team that could otherwise make a deep run. At worst Reimer is an upgrade at backup to Gustavsson. At best he beats out a 38 year old Fleury and the Wild can ride him in the playoffs. Again, this has nothing to do with Wallstedt. He won't play in the NHL at 19.

Minnesota won't ever choose Reimer over Fleury. Not with gm Guerin and coach Dean Evason. They didn't sign Fleury to that contract so he can be s backup. Gustavsson was with Guerin in Pittsburgh also

Man you could remove any one (1) single piece from Wsh and the Capitals still don’t do this.
