You cannot ice 16 forwards

Description
We all know that the goal for the Habs is to fatten up the stats of their forwards on expiring deals to sell them at the TDL. Dadonov, Monahan, Byron (if healthy) and Drouin are all starting the season on the block.

The issue is that in order to get value for them, you have to Play them... And not on your bottom line either, they need a chance to show what they can do to help a team in a top 9 role.

Add to that that Slafkovsky skipped the WJC to start the season in MTL and he also needs to play in a top 9 role, and that Armia & Hoffman need quality ice time if we ever hope to trade them ... This season is already a bit of a disaster. What can be done?

We need clarity on Byron's health. Is he done?
We need to create opportunities for Drouin, Monahan, Dadonov by moving out the players we know we can get value for today. Namely Dvorak and Anderson. It doesn't even matter if you win those trades because it's addition by subtraction. We need to create space for those rehabilitating players to play in middle 6 positions.

Waive Monahan. No concern with him getting claimed. He can find his game in the AHL and be available when there's an opportunity. If he's claimed it's a free 1st, we only stand to gain by losing him.

Pezzetta is an energy player that's a dime a dozen. No substantial loss if he's claimed either.

I like Schueneman, but he's a pending free agent. He's either a 7D we can afford to lose, or he has an amazing year and earns a contract elsewhere. Even then he's trade bait.

Not a bad suggestion. The guy is proud though. He said he was gonna score more points this year than Kadri out of spite. I do not know how it feels to recover from 2 hip surgeries, but the Canadiens can use some swagger like that

Of course, and he'll have opportunities. The mentality is great and necessary, but if the body disagrees there's not a lot you can do.
It just makes no sense to prioritize a roster spot for him at the cost of losing other assets or development ice time. If he's worth a roster spot, he'll get one, it just may not be in Montreal.

I feel like another deal is in the works because of too many forwards. Teams might be willing to make a deal of some kind. This issue is most teams don’t have cap and a lot of these forwards aren’t cheap. If nothing more comes then demotions are going to happen after camp.

Unless, it's Dvorak or Armia for assets. I dont see a deal being made as Hughes refuses to pay to dump player. They'll likely be in LTIR the next 4 years with Price. They dont have to move anybody. I can see Hoffman dumped in the minors and give him another chance later in the season after the TDL, Byron staying on LTIR for most of the year if not all.
It would be foolish to make salary dumps as guys like Drouin, Hoffman, Byron, Dadonov, Monahan will have their contracts run out in the next 2 years during their rebuild so it's not pressing, may as well have them try to salvage some value.
The Price situation also makes the cap less of a concern when it comes to signing Dach and Caufield next season!

Dvorak seems to be the likely party as the Habs have a boatload of centers and more coming with Mysak, Beck, Kidney. Then, I imagine they'll have options, in the middle of the ice with all these 1st rounders. Dvorak is still a really effective top6 center with a good contract and teams seem to be interested in Christian according to the insiders.

Dvorak is the most attractive trade chip I agree. GMs recognize how bad the Habs were last year and the turnaround under MSL even if the fans around here don't.

I think he will be traded before training camp.
