Description
Explanation of moves:
1. Laughton - Laughton is an NHLer, he is versatile. Which is why I value you him in the 2nd rd pk range...perhaps he could command two 2nds or a 2nd AND a 3rd...but the Flyers at this stage need to develop prospects at the NHL level, not the AHL level. Which means that prospects need NHL ice time. All draft picks have potential to be the next great NHL superstar. The Flyers need to collect as many as possible to increase their chances of building a championship roster.

2. Hayes and Frost - This is by fay my LEAST likely trade, however, the Bruins are in WIN NOW mode, Hayes has connections with Boston, this would allow the Flyers to get out from under a bad contract and the Bruins get a little extra incentive with a prospect in Frost. It appears that Frost will NOT pan out in this organization and moving on from him allows the FLYERS to give crucial 3rd Line ice time to a younger prospect with a higher ceiling: Tyson Foerster. And allows the Flyers to get a good look at a younger forward in Zacha who will play big minutes in a top 6 role and high performance is likely in a contract year. The Flyers could extend Zacha or potentially collect more assets in exchange for him at the trade deadline.

3. Cam Atkinson - I feel like this move would be shear brilliance. Columbus might jump at the opportunity to add Atkinson after adding Gaudreau. Atkinson has got game left in the tank, and is an upgrade over the expiring Nyquist. And that is exactly why the FLYERS should pull the trigger on this deal. They would get out from under a 5.8M contract owed Atkinson for 3 years. This would free up a spot a spot in the top 6. Also, I conservatively added a 2nd rd pk..it could potentially command a higher return because of Cam's offensive production. Also, it is worth noting that the Flyers would be able to move on from Nyquist at the deadline and collect even more assets.

4. Sanheim - The Flyers will likely consider moving on from Sanheim at the trade deadline, however, I would have pulled the trigger on this deal this offseason. The Flyers have Zamula and Andrae in the pipeline and Zamula would benefit getting NHL experience NOW because he is NHL ready. Sanheim might not command a first rd pk, a 2nd rd pk is probably more likely, however, if Sanheim performs well in his contract year he could bolster his trade value.

Jackets don’t have the cap space for cam let alone adding to Gus. If he wants to take a cheap deal to come to Columbus after his deal expires I would be fine with that

Cam is only 300K more than Gus...so it is close enough that the Jackets will be able to maneuver the cap.

Additionally, the Flyers could entertain RETAINING some of Cam's cap in exchange for even MORE future assets from Columbus who is, without a doubt in WIN NOW MODES, which is EXACTLY what the FLYERS plan of attack should be.

The Boston trade makes no sense.

How is Boston adding just under $4.5 million in cap space to their current roster?

Why would Boston help PHI get out from Hayes overpriced contract? Is their incentive the guy who you deemed "will NOT pan out" in your description? Doesn't seem like an enticing deal for Boston.

Scott Laughton is a 3mil 4th liner in Ottawa. He's not worth a 2nd to them and he's not a good use of that cap space which they will need next year.

Columbus needs the cap flexibility that Nyquist brings being a pending UFA so they can afford to keep players like chinakov, Gavrikov, Peeke and Texier who all need new contracts next offseason as well all of them will get paid more, some significantly more.

I’d also say they probably want the roster spot in the top 6 so players like Johnson, Marchenko, Chinakov can get some time playing that high in the line up.

Love Atkinson, and if he was a 1 year deal I’d 100% make that trade, but not with him being 3 years left. Columbus will need the cap room and the roster spot.

Zero chance on the Pens trade. We are 1.4 over the cap already, and have 8 NHL Dmen plus Ty Smith. No money, no need and no more trading firsts...JR is gone.

You raised excellent questions. Cap space is definitely an issue. When using this trade feature it showed me Philadelphia's cap under Boston, and I couldn't see where Boston's cap was. This trade would have to be reworked for sure, but if the cap gets figured out I think Boston would entertain the idea of adding Hayes. C depth is obviously important, Hayes is a great teammate, he would be a big upgrade over Zacha, and he expertly controls the puck and the pace of the game.

As for Frost, Boston wouldn't really have a spot for him to develop...this is essentially adding a prospect who could get a call up if there are injuries..who has upside and can help build the prospect pipeline...I say that he won't pan out in Philadelphia, obviously i don't have a crystal ball, he could develop in Philadelphia or elsewhere, the point is that Frost does have value and that in a deal of this caliber where Boston is already getting the better player, there is more incentive to eat salary for an additional price...and that price is a prospect who was a former 1st rd pk and has potential to be a Top 6 player.

Yeah I agree, this trade does pose a salary cap problem. However, in my explanation I note that it is likely Sanheim gets moved at the deadline, however allowing a prospect to play NOW rather than later could be beneficial for player development. The idea here is that Hextall drafted Sanheim and at the Midway part in the season the cap hit on Sanheim would be much less and Sanheim should command a First rd pick somewhere, if not Pittsburgh for the discount at 1/2 Price.

Zacha over the last 3 years has put up 128pts. Hayes has put up 103pts over the last 3yrs. Zacha is also significantly cheaper then Hayes is. Boston for this year is Bergeron-Krejci-Coyle as their top 3 centers. Hayes doesn't fit with Boston right now.

Rare high-effort AGM.

I do think that if we're abandoning ship, there'd be no reason to make trades just for the sake of making trades, we should be trading players with actual value for futures.

The Hayes trade makes very little sense for both teams and is unrealistic due to Hayes' contract, but for the flyers why would they want to trade Hayes if they're abandoning ship? His 7m would help hit the cap floor given we actually abandon ship and he's a great leader/locker room guy for the young players.

A Laughton trade is also questionable due to the leadership he provides along with how undesirable he is (I'd want him as I think he's very underrated but I don't think any GM of another team would say the same). Same type of situation as with Hayes.

I think it'd make a lot more sense to trade guys like Konecny and Provorov. Although they're young enough to stick around through a rebuild, they carry high values and can net a 1st+ return each. Trading them would also help us stay near the bottom of the league for the sake of good draft picks and also allow us to take on bad contracts for more forward-looking assets.

I understand your points. I would have no problem moving on from Konecny and Provorov, HOWEVER, trading these players WHEN THEY ARE ENTERING THEIR PRIME has MORE POTENTIAL FOR DISASTER. Simply getting just a pick might not be a good enough return for each them because they each have All-Star potential... rather than trading aging veterans like Cam Atkinson and Kevin Hayes. There is much less risk for a GM to trade these type of players, who :
1. Have value that is undisutable
2. Have a high salary, so if they are move the FLYERS get assets in return and
3. If future assets are. not on the table then the FLYERS should at least seek at bare minimum cap flexibility.

This is what we see in the deals I have put together. If not for the exact players. This is what they should be searching for. Players on 1 year deals with high salary that could be potentially flipped at the trade deadline for even more assets...

Jackets are absolutely not in win now mode. It's gonna be a couple years before that kicks in. Right now they're in winning would be nice, but developing is more important mode.

Cam puts too much stress on the cap in the future and they have far more important players to spend money on than him.
