I can’t see this really interesting the Canes anymore. Girard is great, but having a 5mil player playing 3LD is a situation that is not ideal. Tampa was able to get away with it, but the Canes need the flexibility right now.

In what world would Girard be a 3rd pair guy on the Canes or any team aside from the Avs? Slavin is obv 1D but G would be more than fine next to Slavin or would be firmly on either side of the 2nd pair.
This is an Avs geared trade no doubt, but I wont have you slander Spinnyboi. He also have a voice of an angel, so there's that.. lol

Girard is really good. But they already made the trade for Burns so he’s going to play at least the next two years next to Slavin. Pesce and Skjei have been a great pairing so doubt they’d break them up. Girard is probably better than Skjei but for next year he’d be playing 3LD, which isn’t ideal given how much he’s making. He’d be a good replacement to play with pesce the following year but from a cap perspective they couldn’t make the deal in the 23-24 season.

Thanks for the Canes perspective. I still think Girard would take over for Burns as the top RD after next season and would be a better 2nd pair option than Pesce or Skjei. However, if its not broke, dont fix it. Some teams just aren't trade partners. Im a big fan of Ethaniel Bear. Necas is a little soft, but a good prospect. Hopefully Pacs comes back in time to mesh with the team.

This world, Avs and Canes have the deepest Defense units in the league. Girard would make 5 top 4 defenseman for the Canes…and in the team that’s been built in this post - the Canes would have a deeper defense…just not a guy with the talent of Makar.

Girard is definitely solid, but he will NOT bump Burns. Bringing him in would mean someone in the top 4 would get bumped, which is a luxury the Canes can't afford right now. We do need to move Gardiner and Bear out and get a solid 3rd LHD for no more than around the $2M mark. Several come to mind, but that sets the D for a while.

I think an age 38/39 Burns would definetly get bumped by any Dman of Girards level.

We’ll have to see how Burns ages. That’s a possibility but I think he’ll be very good in this system and with Slavin for at least 2/3 of remaining deal if not the whole thing based on his physical condition thus far.

Girard might be better than Skjei like I mentioned but the Skjei pesce pairing is too good to break up imo. Girard isn’t knocking pesce off of his spot. Pesce is another level, might not have the offensive flair but all around is one of the top defensive dmen in the league.

Before the Burns deal I thought a Necas girard swap base package was a very good idea but now it just doesn’t make as much sense for a couple of reasons. We’ve got a really good top 4 and need to figure out our third pair but with cheaper guys and with patches being out long term we can’t afford to give up Necas. For what it’s worth I think Necas would absolutely thrive in COL which would be painful to watch for us Canes fans lol

Aside from Don Cherry and other team's twitter accounts, who are the rivals of the Canes?

I think this whole idea aligns with Caniac555's theory that the Canes might really stack the D instead of making one more power upgrade in the Forward ranks (as suggested by attempt to get tkachuk). I agreed that may very well be a possibility if they can't get the deal they want. But Max's injury has dramatically changed all of that. I think now they just sort out the bottom of the D and get creative as hell to improve the offense while leaving room for Max to return. Right now we are Trocheck and Nino out, Kase in with our top 9. That's not going to cut it.

Yeah if patches doesn’t come back at all (and we should have an idea ahead of TDL) then I agree with you. But I think we can also benefit from leaving the top 9 as is to see what we can get from KK Necas Jarvis and let them all get a ton of opportunity.

Worst case if one of them isn’t cutting it and patches looks like he’s not coming back until at least playoffs then we can get aggressive and go after Kane or somebody like that who’s team has fallen out of playoff hunt. Not the canes normal strategy but wouldn’t mind tweaking that as were in our prime cup contention window.

Best case all 3 of those guys take advantage and patches comes back as expected. It becomes a very scary, balanced and deep team.

Understood, Vikodush. I'm a bit more skeptical. That's all. I do think it's not unrealistic that we could be pleasantly surprised by the trajectory of KK, Necas, and Jarvis this year. But, now in our window, not sure how comfortable FO is adopting a wait and see approach. They know on paper we're not an improved offense right now. Let's monitor the situation. May not get completely sorted out until training camp (remember Faulk). We'll find out just how they feel about the current roster. By the way, I'm excited as hell to see Slavin-Burnsy this year!

Oh yeah I agree with you there. I think we’ve got some time to see how the first few months play out though. We should definitely be more aggressive before the TDL though.

Same here - very excited about that pairing!
