Meh, if Miller wants to come to Columbus he can sign a a UFA, but I don’t think Columbus should be giving up high end assets for a rental who doesn’t even make them a cup contender. Please stop sending Miller to Columbus. Would Vancouver really give up a package of Hoglander, Horvat, a 1st and a 3rd for Miller, becuase that’s what you’re asking for from Columbus.

If Vancouver would have let Miller discuss and agree on an extension, then that deal is fine. However, as a rental, that is more than CBJ are willing to pay. No Cuelemans and no 2023 pick. Change the prospect and move the pick to ‘24.

Depends on where Vancouver is. I agree that I don’t think cbj is in a contending position but adding Gaudreau just made your window a lot sooner, and adding a 99 point forward like Miller might be the piece you need to make a serious run. Plus you’re not even giving up players like Johnson, Boqvist, jiricek, or sillinger in this deal which leaves you plenty of upcoming talent.

Adding Miller makes Columbus a playoff contender, maybe. But honestly Columbus D core is suspect at best and will need some major steps forward to make a serious run, I just don’t see it without have a number one d and half of a top 4 d core. They are sooner to be competing, but they’re still at least a year or two before they are truly a competitive team.

Fair enough. Maybe in this scenario Miller is signed long term and used as a first like veteran to lead the young guys coming up. He and Guadreau will still be effective when your true window opens up in a year or 2 with your young guys making the lineup.

Depends on what the price is on the extension, anything for 8.75 would crush Columbus cap, and almost do more hard then good for the long term outlook of the team and put them in cap hell.

I'm also hesitant with Miller. Not just age, but outside of his short stint in VAN, he doesn't have a history as a high-end producer that would warrant this kind of package, or possibly the contract he signs.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy with Miller; but, I'm largely in agreement with @ajp_18 - unless Miller's price comes down (both in trade and in contract value), I don't prefer it to happen, nor see it happening. GMJK just went through a short hell to shed cap for Laine, and I'm not sure he's going to wade back into it immediately absent a good deal. The salary cap will still be flat(ter) next year, and Miller's market is likely not going to be as big as he wants, simply by virtue of the lack of cap teams will have (i.e. Kadri 2.0, if not worse). If he makes it there, I think there is a good chance he'd give CBJ consideration - moves closer to home, young team on the rise with an opening window, chance to play with JG.

But; even with Miller, CBJ's ability to compete in the future doesn't boil down to trading for/signing big name players now; it comes down to how well Johnson, Sillinger, Jiricek, Marchenko, et al. and, yes, even CC develop in the next year or two (the kid was one of the best D-men in the NCAA during the second half of the season). After hoarding as much short term talent as we could before losing Panarin, we already know the organization doesn't have the appetite to go through that again.

Yeah both Vancouver and possible trade partners are hesitant to sign long term with salary. I’m hoping Kadri’s rumoured deal (7x7.25) is a good base point to say where Miller should sign for. Being 2 years younger I could see him pushing for closer to 8, but that being said I believe a 7x8 wouldn’t destroy either Van or CBJ.

Also, in CBJs case, you’ll have Voracek coming off the books soon which will be 8mill plus that can be used on your young players

I agree but I don’t think you should write off Millers performance based on his early seasons. He wasn’t given even close to the opportunity he has in Vancouver when he was with NY and Tampa. Miller has grown into a phenomenal player worthy of a big package at the right price. He’s been over a ppg since coming to Vancouver when he’s given the opportunity to be a go-to guy.

I think a deal with CBJ just boils down to where they believe they’re at right now and where they can be in the next few years. If they think they can contend in a 1-3 years, then adding Miller will absolutely enhance that. But if they still want to wait out their young talent and see a window in 3-5 years, they obviously won’t go for someone like Miller. However after adding Guadreau you would have to assume they have some sort of shorter term goal in mind.

I truly think a deal like this works well for both teams.
