Detroit isn't going to pay a 2nd rounder to add 3M on the books for a D swap.

You guys have the cap space and its a pretty big upgrade. The pick can be lowered though... like a 3rd + 7th or something.

Detroit has no interest in trading the cheaper Oesterle for Dumoulin and helping the Penguins with their cap. Maybe if the Penguins send Detroit a second instead a deal could be made but the way it's laid out we pass.

We could make no trades and be cap compliant for the season. If Detroit doesnt want a top 4 dman for cheap thats fine.

I don't discredit the upgrade, but there are a number of factors hurting this. Oesterle and Dumo are both 30 and on the last year of their current deals. Neither one will be re-signed in Detroit since Chiarot is here for a few years and the Wings have the D pipeline in motion. As it currently sits, Oesterle is the number 7-9 D.

Again, it would be an upgrade, but for one year when Detroit isn't a cup threat it doesn't make sense. Not to mention if DET did re-sign Dumo that would slow down the bevy of prospects coming up.

Fair point. Just thought it was something they would do since they acquired Leddy when they werent really contending so it could be a similar situation here. They could flip him at the deadline if they are out of it.

Dumo has Cup pedigree to his name. Teams gotta pay the Cup tax to get Dumo. Gotta pay more than what Chariot got

Highly doubt Pens will get that kind of return at this point of the summer.

Leddy was acquired to be a leader for Seider and drive offense for the, ahem, defense first Seider. Leddy was rendered moot within 10 games of watching Seider dominate defensively and contributing on offense.

The reason I am making a trade now is
1) to ensure that Smith doesnt start the year in the AHL
2) to have the cap space to carry 3 extras (with their current cap they can only carry 2 extras)

A flip absolutely would have made a lot of sense, and the player fit is better than what Leddy was. I just can’t see him pulling it now after adding 3 D and still having to decide on Walman as an RFA.

Those moves do make sense. But considering Hextall technically doesn’t have to make anymore moves, I don’t think anyone will get moved for the time being

Slight difference between the two. Chiarot was traded for a first because of timing lol. He was acquired this summer as a FA so that means he was sought out.

In this scenario, the trade offer was from Pitt to Det. He was not sought out, but rather offered. Det would not need to pay a “cup” tax because they aren’t the ones asking for him.

There’s isn’t much need for him in Detroit anyways. Just gotta wait and I can only imagine there’s a good price offered for Dumo then I’d definitely move on from him. His defence I think was definitely missed in the playoffs when he got injured. Hes a top pairing shutdown defencemen and in my opinion is better than Chariot. So unless if the trade less than what Chariot got, then I wouldn’t be willing to trade him.

For sure. He’s just on his last year of his contract which is why I would maybe explore the idea of trading him.

I would hope if you're dumping someone like Dumoulin you are using that money to improve the team somehow
