Description
With one year left on his deal, and with a few free agent forward additions, I’m wondering if Detroit may be open to moving Pius Suter. I’m not super familiar with the Wings, but just looking at their roster I would assume Suter slots in at 3C right now after the Copp signing. Last season, Michael Rasmussen had his best offensive year to date and Joe Veleno got his first long-term look in the NHL. Either player could get an opportunity at 3C if Suter isn’t in the long-term plans. In this scenario, Detroit is getting a 22-year-old wing prospect in Martin Kaut. The former 1st rounder likely has third-like upside at this point in his development, but he plays a very well-rounded game and could probably step into a bottom six role in the NHL right now. He’s also the former WJC line mate of Filip Zadina (not that it makes a difference). I could be off a bit on this value, but I think it’s a good starting point for a player in Suter who only has 1 year left before UFA.

Suter profiles like a player that could potentially grow into a greater role in Colorado, like many others players have over the last few seasons (Burakovsky, Donskoi, Nichushkin, Lehkonen, Kadri, Toews). He’s a good skater and skilled player. He has strong underlying numbers at both ends of the ice, especially at even strength. In two NHL seasons, he has a respectable 29 goals & 63 points in 137 games (82-game pace of 17.4 goals & 37.7 points). And at age 26, I like Suter’s upside to grow into a bigger role better than for example, 29 year old Evan Rodrigues. I’m not suggesting that Suter is a 1 for 1 Nazem Kadri replacement or a long-term set-and-forget solution. But at this point in the off-season, Colorado should be looking at guys who can contribute in the middle six and possibly jump in to the 2C role, both internally and externally. I think Suter fits that bill nicely.

Meh return for Suter. Maybe at the deadline but I think he could possibly get a second rounder which I would prefer.

I agree. A 2nd or maybe a better prospect.

Suter was better than many think. He was frequently playing with the bottom 4 D and Robbie Fabbri, so there were a lot of issues there defensively. I think Suter slots in perfectly as a 3C. Rasmussen needs to pick up where he left off to take the 3C spot from Suter.

I think a mid-season trade or deadline deal, Suter might get moved. Veleno likely starts in Grand Rapids. If he doesn't blow the doors off in GR, he will be the first asset to be traded from the Center depth. Copp can move to wing as well, so I could see Suter and Copp on line 2 as well, once Fabbri gets back.

Suter probably gets a younger prospect and a pick at the deadline to a contending team.

I'd like to also point out that I don't think Suter is a good fit for Colorado as a 2C. He might be defensively responsible, but I do think Colorado will want more than 40 or 50 points from their 2C.

Good trade proposal thoughts though. Not far fetched, just not good on timing of the trade.

He's not very young but he's only had two seasons in the NHL on two different struggling teams nonetheless. If the cost of acquisition is moderate, they can always just move on from him next year id they feel that he isn't a good fit. Perhaps he has a great season.

Wings pass, Either a 2023 2nd for Pius Suter or a better prospect than Kaut.

Definitely understandable. Colorado is pretty thin on mid-round picks. They could add a later round pick to Kaut, or possibly upgrade the prospect. I don’t think Olausson or Behrens would be on the table for potentially a rental. Sampo Ranta, Jean-Luc Foudy, or Nikolai Kovalenko could be prospect options for a player of Suter’s caliber.

I agree with you there, Suter doesn't warrant a higher level prospect like the ones mentioned but teams seem to overpay a bit at the deadline which is the only time I could see Suter getting moved. Only ones that cloud really punt him out of the 3C spot are veleno and Rasmussen this season and I don't think either will. By the time Fabbri is back likely have other injuries so that shouldn't be a worry.
