They would only consider if Matthews came with an extension in place, but even then idk if they would do it. It would probably be worth it to try and dump Benn somewhere else or buy him out if he won’t waive (which he probably wouldn’t for Toronto) and pursue Matthews in FA.

That's not getting matthews, especially with benn coming back. That's one of the worst contacts on the league.

Honestly it wouldn't make sense for the leafs unless he was like a pending Ufa and we're just getting what we can. Im a big Robertson fan, but you don't build from the wing. Matthews is the core of the team. Heiskanen is a major building block but I guy like Robertson is the finishing piece.

And if Dallas does that they will remain in mediocrity, Oettinger will leave because now we have the worst defence in the league, they’ll have a d core of Lindell, Harley and borderline scartches with a waiver claim in net. Cale makar, Adam fox, jack hughes, kirill kaprizov, miro heiskanen, and Nikita kucherov. You are failing to recognize the value of term and cap hit. Sure they may not be Matthew’s but on the trade market they’re more valuable. Let’s put it this way, would you rather have 2 years of Matthew’s or 7+ years of any of these guys. Matthew’s is the third best player in the world and holds a ton of value as a player, but in the salary cap era, cap hit and term is also a big factor in a players value. There are strong arguments for so many U25 players with 6+ years of term to be more valuable than matthews. If Matthews is extended, he is only less valuable than mcdavid and makar.

Doesn’t matter if he is overrated or not. With his cap hit, term, production, and age, he is more valuable than matthews. Matthew’s is no question better but hughes is undoubtedly more valuable.
