Sabres can't afford to trade UPL. He mostly likely sticks in the NHL at the end of this season or starting next season. Levi and Portillo are still a couple of years away and the one position they have needed filled for years is in net. They also aren't a JT Miller away from being competitive, they are still too young and need more development from half the roster. I believe they now have the youngest roster in the NHL and that's with Craig Anderson driving up the average age by almost a year.

The Sabres don't need Miller, they are not near contending for the playoffs yet. The Canucks don't need Luukkonen either, they have a ton of prospects in the system (Silovs, Koskenvuo and Young) who could be backups to Demko in the new few years if Spencer Martin leaves the organisation. The Canucks would love to have Buffalo's first though, as they need more A-grade prospects since they did not draft in the 1st round in 2020 and 2021. In terms of value, it's close to equal (assuming that Miller resigns in Buffalo, he produces well and Buffalo improves as a team). Buffalo still needs Luukkonen, he will take over as starter after Anderson leaves and Levi still needs time to develop.

Just because you try to sell it doesn’t mean the Sabres will buy it. And they sure as hell ain’t buying this trade.
