Hughes likes Anderson and already said that if he was traded, it would be for an offer he can't refuse, meaning a big return.

Guentzel straight up for Anderson is interesting considering the contract length, but the immediate adding of 1M on our cap makes it hard to do. I think Hughes thinks hard about it tough.

Hughes would do a lot more than think about it. Even if he's high on Anderson, Guentzel has scored 20+ in 5 straight seasons along with 16 his rookie season in 40 games. Scored 40 twice and is coming off an 84 point season in addition to being a year younger. That's robbery.

PPG in the past 3 years:
Guentzel:
2021-22: 1.11
2020-21: 1.02
2019-20: 1.10

Anderson
2021-22: 0.46
2020-21: 0.46
2019-20: 0.15

Maybe Pittsburgh accepts if you throw in the whole province of Quebec

Yes, if we were contenders, you'd be 150% right, Hughes would do it and send PIT flowers and a box of good champagne bottles. Problem is we're rebuilding and won't be competitive until 2024-2025. So trading Anderson for Guentzel means that his contract ends in 2 years, he'll be 30, and there's a good chance we lose him for nothing. Anderson will still be there on a 2nd/3rd line bringing grit and his share of goals.

That also would mean you can ship Guentzel out at the TDL sooner for pieces that can also help your roster sooner. If they really wanted to get max value, they could retain 3 million for 2 years and flip Guentzel to a contender early. The return on that would be pretty ridiculous I'd imagine given how much Hagel returned. Either way you can garner prime assets sooner with Guentzel than you probably can with Anderson.

M. Matheson 4yrs/$4.875 m age 28
M. Pettersson 5yrs/$4,025,175 age 26

Guentzel>>>>>>>>Anderson
Matheson=Pettersson (Matheson probably slightly better)

MTL total cap hit from this trade is $10,025,175 for 7 years
PIT total cap hit from this trade is $ 10,375,000 for 9 years

PIT adds more cap and term while getting older and way worse, but at least they get a 3rd pick. Yep this is a nightmare for the Penguins.

I don’t normally throw my 2 cents in but I just couldn’t help myself when I saw all the Montreal Canadien fans declining this. There is a scene in the movie, Mr. Deeds when Deeds gets his heart broke and decides he doesn’t want to be rich anymore. So, he decides to give his money away to the United Negro College Funds and when the guy sees it he has a heart attack in utter disbelief and joy.

I could imagine GM Kent Hughes having the same reaction if Pittsburgh ever offered this.
