RANKING EVERY TEAMS BEST PROSPECT FOR EVERY POSITION

Description
This is a different way to rank prospects. It is a way to show depth and avoid repeat positions. POSITIONS ARE DETERMINED BY WHAT CAPFRIENDLY HAS AS THEIR MAIN POSITION, NOT WHERE I THINK THEY PLAY. Some pools get kind of screwed over because their top prospects are not included because there is somebody better at the same position.
Examples:
Seattle- wright is imo a top 3 prospect in the league but because beniers is the best prospect in the league, wright does not count towards these rankings.
Dallas- Dallas has 3 top 12 center prospects but because this model only counts for the best, stankoven and bourque don’t count towards these rankings even though both would be the top centers on 2/3rds of the league.
BUF- peterka is a top 25 prospect in the league but because Quinn is also in the system, he isn’t the top RW prospect in the system.

If there is a missed prospect or ranking please don’t grill me; it’s 192 total prospects. Yes some top prospects are missing but when I do my second version of the top 100 prospects they will definitely be there. Scratches are notable prospects who were outshined by another but still great prospects as is.

The rankings below show the strength of a certain prospect relative to other prospects who play the same position mainly. System is like my others, the lowest average score is the better the pool is. The closer a prospects relative rank is, the more balanced a pool is in my opinion. Certain positions are deeper than others obviously. Mctavish is the same rank as Pelletier zellweger, niemela, dostal and kemell and obviously mctavish is the best prospect there by a large margin. The lowest position for a teams best prospect for said position, that is likely a position they will target earlier in the 2023 draft. For example phillys center and RD rankings are low. I would expect them to target a RD early next draft as gauthier will be playing C in college.

The scoring system:
First number is LW, second is C, third is RW, 4th is LD, 5th is RD, 6th is G. The average position will be calculated after each relative position is determined.

Note this does not portray my views on the strength of every pool. Lots of teams have top end talent not included with this metric. Teams like Detroit, Buffalo, and Dallas get the short end of the stick as they have a lot of their talent in repeated positions. These rankings and this metric is used to show how balanced a pool is as well. It can also be used to predict what position a team may draft next as certain positions are weaker than others. If I were to do this before the 2023 draft it would be a better way of determining a teams prospect pool needs. I would not be surprised if teams who are dragged down by one position here, target that position in the next draft.

Let me know your thoughts on the rankings and anywhere I could have been wrong wether that’s with choosing who represents your team at a certain position or the selected players ranking. AGAIN I BASED THE POSITIONS ON WHERE CAPFRIENDLY HAS THEIR POSITIONS. Any feedback helps for future versions as I want to have the best rankings possible.

The main weak points in this pool are RW and RD but judging by the fact Detroit has seider and raymond, they will be just fine there. LW is also a weakness but one of their many centers like berggren can move over to wing. Soderblom would be the top RW prospect and he is a mammoth of a man. 6’8” 250lbs and he was the highest goal scoring U21 player in the SHL. Very very very intriguing prospect and I feel he is undercooked massively based on how strong detroits pool is.

No question the most complete squad. Each one of these players is in my top 100 and that is without Addison and khutsnutdinov who are also both in my top 100. Before even starting the rankings, I bet this will be the group that finishes first in the average position of prospect.

With the best young d corps graduating recently, they are left with what was 2 years ago, some of their middle of the pack defensive prospects. Jones, miller, Schnieder, and lundkvist all are officially big leaguers so these are in a way the left overs.

No pinto is not being forgotten, I do not consider him a prospect. Without injury he would have been an NHLer last year so imo he is no longer a prospect. I don’t think Boucher is necessarily a good prospect, but he is the best RW in the sens pool, regardless of draft position.

Two actual RD prospects with some shot of making the NHL. Collins was a 2022 6th round pick and mccleary was a 2021 7th. I give the edge to collins only because he is younger and picked earlier but tbh a huge target in the 2023 draft for the pens will be a RD.

No wright as beniers is a better prospect imo. Both are top 3 affiliated prospects and the two best centers so the future is bright for the kraken. This past draft was amazing for them and they were some of the best drafters. Francis was the GM behind the slavin, pesce, and aho picks. I trust his drafting and getting Nelson, Nyman, and firkus all on day two, who I thought were all fantastic picks, shows a lot of promise for the young franchise.

Personally think Nils Lundkvist is by far the better RD prospect than Hunter Skinner. Also I think you’re sleeping a bit on Othmann. Overall, great job, this was cool to see.

I knew I forgot one major one. Gritsyuk is one of the most intriguing prospects tbh. I like his KHL stats and when he comes over he could be an impact player immediately. I could see him being a kaprizov lite. I would put gritsyuk under Howard and above maccelli. It wouldn’t really effect the devils rankings all that much as they would be an 8AVG vs 9AVG but it would knock CAR NYR NSH and ARZ down a grading percentage. Looking at it, it wouldn’t effect the rankings of the teams at all but if I were to replace Foote with gritsyuk it would improve the devils. Thanks for points that out.

Lundkvist technically isn’t a prospect anymore but he would definitely improve the rags pool if he was. He would be around Wilde imo so the rags overall average would have gone to by a whole point so they would be over colorado if he was there. Rags pool has gotten picked to the bone over the past two years with graduations of top end talent. As for othmann, I think he is slightly overrated tbh among the league. Here I have othmann as my 29th best number one prospect. With these rankings it shows the rags are an even pool overall compared to top heaviness. The 2023 draft should help their pool improve and if some of the young talent and top end talent preforms, I could definitely see them in the top half next season. As of now though, I will admit I am lower on othmann contrary to popular opinion.

I’m curious how you ranked the goalies because when I look at them by the numbers the rankings don’t make sense to me.

I'd flip Marchenko over to the LW since it's apparently both the position he played the most in the KHL and the position he most prefers. Probably insert Dumais as the Jackets top RW prospect.

Personally it is age and a combination between ceiling and floor and where that middle is to me. I am basing it on both stats and what I have seen from the prospects. Goalies are some of the hardest to rank as they’re so unpredictable. For me some of the goalies like Brennan who are really young get a boost because they still have a lot of upside. I see you are a fan of Edmonton so you are likely questioning the skinner placement. His floor to me is much higher than most of the goalies on this list but because his ceiling is lower in my opinion, he gets a middle of the pack ranking while he could be a top 10 goalie on this list in 5 years. Skinner is one of the oldest goalies here and his NHL play has been good, but I see him capping out as just good. Another goalie who is older is kochetkov who is higher on my list based on his KHL play and how much higher his ceiling is imo. It is also hard to rank based on competition too. There are more high scoring and more difficult leagues to be in. Here is how much of a boost I give a goalie to project them to an NHL level based on their league from highest boost to lowest

The stats of a junior player I take less seriously as those numbers tend to be lower because they’re playing in such high scoring leagues. It’s easier to project imo with the bottom of the list players tbh. Age is also a factor because of a goalie is putting up slightly worse stats and is a year younger, they are in my opinion a better prospect because of the room to grow. Again prospects are not an exact science and especially comparing those in different ages makes it less predictable as well. Goalies are the prospects I am overall the least familiar with but the top 20 I have seen gameplay on and I have also not only looked at stats as well. It’s not an exact science and it could get tweaks in revised versions. I am obviously open to changing the rankings if you have a case for one player over another but this is a combination of stats, eye test, and age.

I'd flip Marchenko over to the LW since it's apparently both the position he played the most in the KHL and the position he most prefers. Probably insert Dumais as the Jackets top RW prospect.

I do agree marchenko should be a LW but because capfriendly has him as a RW, I am ranking him among the RWs. Marchenko would also be in a similar position to where he is on the right on the left and dumais would be higher on the right than Malatesta is on the left and their ranking as a team could move from 4 to 2 as they only have to gain a net 9 spots to jump there. If capfriendly were to change it, CBJ would jump to 2nd or 3rd but even so, the difference between 2 and 5 is 1.6 points but the difference between 1 and 2 is 4 points. Could improve their spot but not much higher than they currently are.

Center - LAP
Lw- PERSSON
RW- RYBINSKI
LD - LucaJo atm (alexeyev hasn’t proven to be better)
RD- Iorio
G- BJORKLUND only goalie under 23.. of age doesn’t matter Fucale

I can definitely see where you’re coming from here. Fucale I believe isn’t calder eligible so he is automatically not a prospect. Rybinsky had a good year in the WHL but he did it as a triple over ager. Clark I see being a better bet for the NHL even if the ceiling is lower. The only one I am really confused with with persson over miroschnichenko. Miroschnichenko was one of my top prospects this draft. Why do you say persson over miroschnichenko?

For the Sabres, Quinn & Peterka have played both LW & RW
They often played on the same line in the AHL this year

Again, I based it on where capfriendly put their main positions. I know it’s not perfect ofc and there will be situations like peterka but it’s just a way to have a position ranking without having the added hassel of “is this guy a left wing, center, or right wing? Where did they play a majority of their games at?” If I do believe peterka is a LW mainly but his capfriendly position is RW so he can’t count. Counting peterka would have bumped Buffalo up to 2nd but if Columbus and Detroit got the same treatment, they could both likely beat out Buffalo. Detroit had a 23,28, and 26 which could have turned into 3, 17, and 6. That would have left their total at a 7.3 which would have beaten Buffalo by a tad. I didn’t pick and choose positions, it is literally just capfriendlys positions.

Yeah, i get all that, but was just letting you know.
I’m sure you’ve noticed CapFriendly isn’t always the most accurate, especially with the forward positions

Nbd though

Of course, Tim stutzles main position is still LW. I think he played like 70 games at center or something. I don’t know how often they update positions but they should be doing it a little more often tbh.

Ofc, lysell is one of my favorite prospects and easily the top RW from the 2021 draft as is. I would say he is the second best winger only behind eklund and even at that, he has a case for being the best winger as of now. Lorhei is imo one of the most underrated prospects. I think because he is the bruins 2nd best prospect people don’t look at him that highly because the bruins pool is objectively weak, but considering that he is better than half of the top LD prospects in the league for sure says something. If he were a RD he would slide into either 10th or 11th so top third. I would say he is without question a top 30 D prospect which on the surface may not seem like all that much but then you realize the bruins have been in a playoff position and trading away firsts for years. Bruins drafting often gets crapped on but since 2019, their drafting has been over the top based on their draft location. The 13,14,15 disaster kind of gave the bruins draft team a bad rep but they have been doing well lately. It’s not like the Bs have never gotten day 2 talent as carlo and swayman were both day 2 picks but as of late, I think it has been much better. I’m NGL, on draft day in 2021 I was hoping lysell would fall to carolina as he fits their draft mold. When I saw the bruins at 21 I wasn’t all that worried they would take him and was more worried about edmonton dallas florida or Nashville scooping him up. The Bs took him and I was kinda shocked but in the end I’m glad the Bs are building up for the future as the core is a mix of young and old. Krejci left last year, Bergeron could leave this year, and then pasta could walk next year too. I think it will be a retool period for the next few years but if their drafting keeps up, they won’t be out of a playoff spot for long at all.

A ton of work went into this. Kudos

As a hawks fan I'm not sure I agree with having Nazar below Kemmell, Yurov, and Lysell. Also think Comesso is definetly a little low on this list. He's won of the best goalie prospects in the world right now. Rinzel is probably a little too high honestly and there's no reason Korckinski is below Matechyuk. But all that is just me nitpicking about my own teams prospects. Overall great work

Miroschnichenko is really good but likely won’t see the NHL / AHL for 3 years. I believe he signed a 3 year extension in Russia. Persson imo had a really solid rookie camp and looked much better than Miroschnichenko. I think he’s extremely underrated and a steal where we drafted him. Big fan. Miroschnichenko Ceiling is higher but imo PERSSON will be NHL ready sooner

great job.
First, I see you corrected your previous post and added Levi to the GK list.
Second, you also ranked Kemell highly. When KA stepped up to the microphone for his 16th pick I was certain he would say Joakim Kemell.
When Nashville selected him next, the announcers said he was a slam dunk.
I guess I have to trust Jeramiah Crowe knows more than the Hockey Pundits who all ranked Kemell among the top 10.
Third, you correctly pointed out that the Sabres do not have ANY RHD in the pipeline.
Finally, I rarely agree with LOVE but he is correct, it is more likely that Peterka will play LW.
I read your answer to him but the fact remains, most hockey writers rank the Sabre prospect pool much higher than fifth.
I suspect the flaw in this ranking is having strong prospects playing the same position, Quinn/Peterka, Savoie/Krebs, Power/Samuelsson and Levi/Portillo.
Just in case there is a question about Samuelsson's ceiling just a quick comparison of key stats with Romanov who was just traded for the 12th OA:
........................hit/60..blk/60..%PK TOI..OZ% PTS/60
Samuelsson......7.1.....4.3.........52.2........40%.....0.7
Romanov..........8.5.....5.4.........49.2........43.3.....0.5
I would not say Samuelsson is worth the 12 OA but that is a very strong comparison with some one who was.
So the Sabre's score is severely down graded because they have multiple strong prospects at center, RW, LHD and GK and extremely weak prospects at LW and RHD.

Let me close you did a great job not once but twice, I would imagine the first one required a great deal of research and the second one even more.

Couple of things to note with the Sabres prospects.

Jack Quinn - He was shifted to left wing and seems to prefer his off hand side now.
Kisakov - Eliminated because of Quinn being on the left side now.
JJ Peterka - Added as the best RW prospect as he was playing RW with Quinn on the left most of last season.
Savoie - No argument, best Center prospect.
Power - No argument, best LD prospect.
Levi - No argument, best goalie prospect.
Komarov - No argument, best RD prospect.

So it would be - Quinn, Savoie, Peterka, Power, Komarov, and Levi.

Overall a very good list, appreciate the effort put into it.
