Description
Dvorak fits with Chicago long term.
Drouin should benefit from a fresh start and being in less of a pressure cooker. Decent crop of Francophones in Calgary right now. Salaries made equal through retention. No one’s giving a 1st round pick for Weegar playing less than top pair minutes. Probably makes the most sense in Montreal now, short of RHD, and Matheson’s old D partner. There’s also the ability to get creative with Lucic and Dadonov expiring contracts.
More realistically though, Hughes just goes after Huberdeau and Weegar as UFAs after the season. I don’t see either signing in Calgary long term. Probably makes more sense for Calgary to tank and focus on developing their younger players now. But sure, hold on to them until the deadline if you really want to hoping for maybe a better return. Maybe.

Toews is not a 1C anymore. I am also not sure Dvo fits into Chicago's long term plan considering Kirby and Cat did not. I just do not think this makes a lot of sense for either team. If the habs want to bring in Toews to mentor the young centers I would just wait for him to be a UFA next offseason.

Pretty sure Ottawa's offer for weegar is better than Drouin.

Pretty sure 6 other team's offer would beat Drouin retained.

You do know that when a team is looking at trading a player, they try and get the most value possible right?

Don't know where you get the idea Weegar won't play top pair minutes. The season hasn't started yet. Either way Calgary can get a better return for him as a rental if they go that route than Drouin.
I feel Chicago would be more interested in getting futures for their captain and someone will likely oblige.

Hahahah, "decent crop of francophones in Calgary" "I don’t see either signing in Calgary long term" Those two things are said in the same description... Huberdeau is the francophone, Pelletier, Meloche may not crack the roster. You can't think that would actually be a factor for bringing in a significantly worse player in a trade right?

Look at who Calgary has currently in their top 4. Nuff said.
Dvorak could be packaged for futures at any point in the remaining 3 years on his deal. In the meantime, they still need to ice a hockey team with competent players.

Andersson, Weegar and Tanev. Tanev could slot down to the third pair pretty easy, he is 32 turning 33 this year.

What is this even a response too? Yeah the money basically evens out with the exception that Dvo has more term. I still do not know how this really benefits either team.

Either way you slice it, he’s bottom 4. Hanifin Andersson is your clear top pair.

Yeah Weegar and Kylington second pair, don't see the problem? Zadorov and Tanev third pair.

Flames say no.
Doubt they trade Weegar.
If they did, they could get much better value then Drouin

The point is that if you’re bringing in Toews’s salary, then you’re moving out Dvorak. To which team that ends up being, doesn’t really matter to me.

What’s the Flames’ long term contract offer to Weegar?

Huby and Weegar aren't likely to sign in CGY, where they'll be competing, but are more likely to sign in MTL...where they are tanking?

Calgary’s two best players just forced their way out. If they’re smart, they go for a full rebuild.

Tanking last year with the draft in Montreal? From day 1? Yes, 100%. Very successful at it as well.
Carey Price? Take the year off.

Short memory for Leafs fans, but last time we tried to win, we lost in the cup finals to a loaded team that was $18mm over the cap.

Why anyone would want to name their hockey team after the piece of a maple tree that dies and falls down in the winter is beyond me. Wake me up when you win a playoff series.

Thats an absolute disaster of a trade for the Flames, if they are going to move Weegar then get atleast a first rd pick for him and maybe a decent prospect at the very least, Drouin is a complete negative asset to any team thats in or about to rebuild.

Flames can get a 1st round pick for Weegar at the deadline if he’s playing top pairing minutes all season and playing solid hockey. He’s worth far less now cuz competing teams don’t have cap space. Even at half salary.
Debatable whether or not the Flames will use him in that role, given the fact that they already have multiple vastly superior defencemen coming off excellent seasons.
Drouin is better than people think. Most of his haters don’t understand how legitimate mental health issues actually are. He will likely be productive wherever he ends up, and it’s such a low risk to take on a 1 year deal given what the upside could be. And Flames need wingers way more than they need another D.

Thats just a really bad argument, Weegar has some of the best advanced stats at his position and might be one of the most underrated dmen in the league, hes worth far more than Drouin who even if he is still as skilled hasn't proven anything as a top 6 winger. Flames may need wingers but giving up a top pairing dman for someone you don't even know will show up to work isn't close to the realm of possibility.

The other thing is at half retained Weegars contract is worth just over 1.6 mil against the cap, if you think a top pair dman like him doesn't have value because of cap space then literally no one has any worth. There are some teams that will bend over backwards to get him at the deadline if we choose to go that route and it will certainly be for more than a 1 for 1 in Drouin. You have to add some picks or prospects for the Flames to even consider your offer.
