Most of you are not answering the question that was asked. The question was, what would you do if the team starts winning and appears to be headed for the playoffs? The question most of you are answering is whether there’s any chance that could happen. Both of these are interesting questions though, so I’ll try to answer them one at a time.
Let’s start with the first question: The Canadiens proved in 2021 that if you can get into the playoffs, anything can happen, and there have been times (like the first time the Kings won the cup) when I’ve felt like every team who makes the playoffs has an almost equal chance at the cup. I also think playoff experience is valuable, even if it’s an early exit. So I wouldn’t start selling off players to try to drop out of a playoff spot just to get a higher draft position, but I wouldn’t trade futures for deadline rentals either.
Now the second question: I think this team could surprise some people. The forward depth looks good if they are healthy, they have some promising young players, the things I hear people saying about St-Louis remind me of Rod Brind’Amour, and even with Price out they have a proven #1 goalie. However, the defence looks questionable, they’re in a tough division and the better of the two conferences, and Detroit, New Jersey and Ottawa are much farther along in their rebuilds than Montreal. So while I wouldn’t be surprised to see some significant improvement, I’d be shocked if they make the playoffs.
