Generally, teams taking on cap dumps in return for futures like Arizona will prefer a player whose actual compensation is less than his cap hit (e.g., Alex Kerfoot), not a player who is "upside-down" on his cap hit like Mike Hoffman.

Man, I'm not even that high on Mailloux and Norlinder but all of this to get rid of 1 year of Byron and 2 years of Hoffman while getting back a prospect with one of the worst injury history of all time?

Byron will probably get buried on LTIR and if not, I think we can manage the last year of his contract..

Getting rid of Hoffman will be steep but a 2nd and a B prospect should do it or else we can wait next summer so the price can get less expensive.

I get Mailloux's background but he's still a 1st round pick with good potential and the 2023 2nd will be top 40. Its 2 assets worth keeping in a rebuilding context. I get that shedding salary is hard nowaday but Hoffman and Byron are not that much of a problem IMO. We need ONE salary move to be okay for Dach until next year, I think we can figured it out without giving up that much.

243/430 career points for Hoffman come on PP for 49.5% of his production
On a team that for MTL was Historically the worst in 110+ years
13/35 pts came on PP for 37% PP Production

RS for Hoffman at 2.25m and MTL still shaves 2.25m cap
Plus they can now package Hoffman to any number of teams with a good PP needing depth.

EDM could do a deal for Puljujarvi getting paid to switch a 36 pts player for a 35 pts player leaving their roster 750K less heavy
Plus unlike Puljujarvi they can rely on Hoffman to produce on PP 2 consistently even in his worst years he'll put up what others would call career PP numbers(look it up)

COL could do any number of deals depending on the direction
Given what they lost on PP a cheap option like Hoffman makes sense.
Maybe a deal for Erik Johnson to come to MTL getting MTL a Prospect and a pick ?

FLA makes some sense given the loss of Huberdeau fand Marchment rom a special teams POV

CGY in a deal for Monahan maybe so he can play beside Dach

ANA maybe since they seem to be adding surpringly outta no where with Klingberg after letting Milano and Steel walk with no QO its really hard to say what they're doing .

My point is Cap Strapped teams are willing to make moves for players still producing
True Capdumps are like Beagal , Rousel , Ladd, Backes, ext
That said teams like VGJ F themselves into situations where they have to dump players regardless of skill
They dumped the reigning Vezina Winner for Cap space, they dumped Pacioretty with 45pts/47 games actually paying to do so

It all comes back to "Everyone has a price"
Even burden's like Perry in ANA his last few years
Suddenly he's valuable again now that his pay isnt more then his production

Spent the last 4 year on IR
50+ games then next year 20+ games
Comes back for 40+ games then next year 20+ games
Dude will try at camp and likely get hurt or transition to coaching.

I have a strong feeling he'll be getting Franky Boullions starting position in Development as Coach in Brassard after he retired
