How Miller to the CBJ could actually work for Columbus

Description
Miller covers a top 6C spot for the next 7 years and Johnson can fill in as a top 6 playmaker to replace Voracek on the 2nd line and eventually Gaudreau on the first line when he starts to regress. Chinakhov enters as a 3rd line winger when Voracek expires after this season. If Jiricek isn't ready then Bean re-enters the lineup and either a vet is signed for near minimum and short term or Christiansen is carried as a 7th dman.

As for the trade, money has to be taken back over at least the next 2 years so that Columbus can afford to re-sign Miller if the CBJ are going to invest anything of value into acquiring him. Trading away Voracek to make space is simply too expensive and would close to double the price paid to acquire Miller in the first place. I realize both of the players being sent out were just re-signed this off season, but Gaudreau changes a lot of the team's planned future. This trade also leaves the Jackets with $18M + cap increase for re-signing Sillinger, Johnson, Marchenko, Robinson and Blankenburg in 2024-25.

I certainly don't mind that return package, but I'm still struggling to understand why Miller to Columbus makes sense

I think it works in this scenario. Pretty much solidifies their top 6 centers for the remainder of his contract and makes it so they don't have to rely on Johnson being more than the playmaker we already know he is. The lineup is solid all the way through as it matures and the choice between Jiricek, Ceulemans and Boqvist is made. The only other scenarios I would prefer to this are acquiring Larkin or Barzal and those just don't seem nearly as likely.

If the Canucks had their choice, they'd definitely pick Jiricek out of the three, but if the Jackets are only offering Boqvist, I'm sure they won't be complaining

Boqvist is more about making the money work. His contract is great, but they'll need almost every dollar they can get to extend Miller.

I can’t see Van taking back both boqvist and roslovic, they wanna free up cap space so they’d take one probably boqvist and want a prospect like cuelemans or someone over roslovic. Cbj could send roslovic to a different team in a separate trade to free up the cap they’d need for a miller extension

If Miller comes with an extension, id have to believe the Canuck’s will push for a 2023 first. They didn’t trade Millet at the draft because they rather receive a 2023 first than a 2022 one

Canucks would be selling low on Miller if the move him in a cap clearing move

This is a post about how it makes sense from the CBJ point of view. If the Canucks want something different then it just doesn't work. The money has to be included, they're not gonna give up their 2023 1st and they're not going to give up 2 of their 3 young RD. At most the Jackets could include another non 1st round pick or a LD prospect not named Mateychuk or Svozil.

So basically what you’re telling me that the Jackets will only acquire Miller if they don’t have to give up any valuable pieces?

That's a pretty silly statement considering they're giving up at least 2 in this trade and potentially a 3rd if Roslovic continues to play like he did for the last 2-3 months of the season last year.

I highly doubt the canucks trade Millet without getting a 2023 first round pick…

Again, that's fine if you think that. I'm providing a counter to the many proposals sending Miller to Columbus that actually makes sense from their point of view. The many silly proposals expecting 2 of the CBJ's top prospects and their 2023 1st that leaves them in a position where they would have to pay another 1st and A prospect to make enough cap space to re-sign Miller are completely out of the realm of possibility. Frankly, considering the state of the cap I don't think there are many teams that are going to part with anything close to what the Canucks are expecting and that's why they're talking extension now instead of trading him. I would be surprised if they can get a package that resembles this in return for Miller.

I don’t think a 2023 first and a good prospect is such a huge pill to swallow. Much worse rentals have fetched much bigger returns.

It could have also been that no one offered a 2022 1st for him. At least not a top-15 or top-20 pick. At this point, they will only get a 1st at deadline, once teams know generally where they are in standings. So unlikely to be in top-25 then too.

Canucks may be better off going for a 2 young player package.

I think Miller wants a good chunk more. And frankly Miller is going to be 30 at the start of his next contract. I suspect he wants 9 mil and then given his playing style when he declines in his early 30s it's going to be an ugly contract like Jamie Benn or similar

I agree with both of you. Even with being this optimistic about the contracts the CBJ get everyone signed to and the cap going up $1.5M, Miller barely fits in under the cap. In reality the CBJ just won't have the cap space they would need to get Miller signed and not lose additional players or assets to make enough space for him.

As a leafs fan, I am not interested in paying the likely price for him (let alone the ludicrous price van fans seem to think he's worth as a rental) because there is just no way we could resign him.

If they want full value it needs to be a team that will be able to resign him.

I still think the Bruins make the most sense

Nick Foligno got a first and a fourth
Ben Chiarot got a first and smaller assets
Savard got a first

Miller is astronomically better than all of them. To think he could barely get a first shows your limited knowledge about the NHL… kinda expected more from you

1. Those players were dealt at the deadline...when most teams have an idea where they are picking. None of those guys were traded in the summer when teams are gambling more with their picks.

2. Two of them are also dmen. Wingers have less trade value, especially as rentals. (Not my rule, but it has been a trend in recent years).

3. Also, Foligno got a #25, Savard got #32. I specifically mentioned not getting a likely top-15 or top-20 pick.

4. You are asking a team that has picked in top-12 last two years.

5. Not all 1st round picks are the same.

6. Happy to go toe-to-toe with anyone on my knowledge of NHL, especially when it comes to trading draft picks.

1. Your first point isn’t that important. Who says we aren’t trading him at the deadline?

2. Miller primarily plays center. He can actually play all 3 forward positions and plays all special teams in every scenario

3. I think the difference between Miller and scrubs like Foligno and Savars is A LOT more than a few draft spots.

4. I’m not saying Miller to CBJ makes sense, I’m saying that your counter offer is simply horrendous

5. Again, no matter the year, if Foligno, Savard, and Chiarot can get first round picks and more, I think 99 point JT Miller can do a lot better

6. Your argument displayed hasn’t given me very much confidence on your knowledge of trade values and draft picks

I can only see this making sense for CBJ in-season if they actually look like a playoff team. Even then I think they are much better off compiling their futures for a defenseman -- Gavrikov and Peeke are massively miscast as top pairing guys IMO and the defense is more likely to sink them. Someone like Chychrun, Provorov, or Weegar seems like a much better use of assets

Gavrikov isn't playing as a top pairing guy and he's a fantastic 2nd pairing dman. He only had some top pairing games when Werenski was out of the lineup. I agree that Peeke shouldn't be top pairing and Larson has said as much too. It's just that he was their best option to play there and seemed far more capable than Boqvist or Bean. They likely won't be trying to find a top pairing guy for the next 2-3 years at least until they can more accurately project Jiricek, Ceulemans and Mateychuk.
