Justin Holl clears waivers at the start of the season

Description
The majority of the teams league wide will need to waive good players in order to be cap compliant. There will be some movement, but I believe most will go unclaimed by other teams due to cap space.

gotta think clifford would be in the NHL over mcmann right
and quite the interesting idea waiving holl, maybe one of the bottom teams would take him (ahem chicago ahem) could use him as a 6/7D

Bold move to run with 5/6 defenceman being left shot when you combine the fact that all 4 centres are left shot as well.

amazing how every other teams decent 2nd pairing RHD are worth their weight in gold, yet Holl is waiver fodder. Hilarious.

I agree - this mess is the nhl’s own making - but too many teams are cap strapped so there will be a lot of guys (decent players) going through waiver wire. But if I understand the rule - Teams that grab them have to play them so there’s that to consider

He's trying to hide that there isn't enough money for Simmonds to be on the roster.

Not sure any of the bottom feeders pick him up on waivers, we wouldn't be able to flip him if anyone else put a claim in.

Maybe they grab him and flip their other RHD for something.

Holl gets dinged a lot because he's literally the un-sexiest asset I could imagine in the league - a guy best suited for the bottom pair, probably paid a little bit too much at $2M, on the wrong side of 30, just nothing really attractive about him. I think some of his undervaluing comes from the fact that every Maple Leafs ACGM has him going out the door ("if he's so great why are you always trying to move him?"), but to act like he's a cap dump at $2M is just silly. He's fine. He's worth a 4th rounder for a team that wants to have a more reliable RD3.

that's just it though. Holl may be unsexy as you say, but he certainly isnt over paid or best suited to the bottom pair. He's a middle as middle can be defender that is pretty much what every team but half a dozen max have on their 2nd pair. He isnt spectacular at anything but he's solid defensively, can put up points if used as such and reasonably versatile. He got all the blame when Muzzin was hurt and recovering for being the bad one on the pair despite putting up the better numbers.
The funniest thing is that if he threw a big body check or crosschecked guys more (and took more penalties) everyone who hates him would think he was amazing without him changing any other aspect of his game

Obviously Simmonds and Clifford are waived, because they can be. They want too waive them early and use them when needed. Having two exempt players on the fourth line is strategic. Most teams will focus on players in and around the league minimum because they have too. Holl at 2mil might get through, if not then make trade, but at this point nobody is helping anybody out. The majority of the teams league wide are cap strapped and the those that aren't are sallery strapped or in rebuild mode.

I think I leaned third pair for him because he reminds me a lot of Scott Mayfield on the Isles - both bigger dudes (6'4", 211 for Holl and 6'5", 220 for Mayfield) that are somewhat physical (each gets credit for about 1-1.5 hits per game) but not a crazy Kronwall-type hitter. Mayfield is another guy who's probably better than half the league's RD2s but is RD3 on the Isles behind Pulock & Dobson - but that's the kind of depth a contender is going to *want*. If you can have a second pair guy on the third pair because you're top 4 is that good? You've got playoff aspirations, baby, and someone's gonna give up an okay asset for Holl because of that.

The only thing I think that can depress his value is if GMs really start smelling blood in the water over the Leafs' cap situation - that's why Kerfoot probably gets moved (they're $1.5M over right now, trading Kerfoot clears $3.5M with 13 forwards signed, then sign Sandin for under $2M and call it a day) (maybe find a better minimum contract guy than Kyle Clifford or Joey Anderson tho)

oh yeah, ideally you want guys like that playing a step below where they can play. That's one of the reasons tampa, colorado and carolina have been so good. If you have a 3rd line made up of 2nd liners and a bottom pair of 2nd pairing guys, not only are you deep as hell but you can absorb injuries without missing a step.

Yeah Holl wouldnt clear waivers. Despite the fanbases hatred for him he does his job

Just look at the names hes associated with in terms of defensive play in the playoffs

At 1 year 2mill and with the ability to play top 4 /PK yeah someone would grab him

Still see him getting traded but who knows
