Why is that the right thing to do? He's the one who signed an 8 year 84 million dollar contact. Let's not pretend that he's suffering here. If he really wanted to win he could've taken 8 million and let the Habs spend money elsewhere.

Players who sign monstrosity contracts aren't usually the players that are dead set on winning, imo.

Look at Tampa - core guys take pay cuts and they win. Case and point

this isn't on price. he carried the team for years. he did all the heavy work and the team let him down. let him chase the cup if he wants to.

I genuinely have No sympathy for anyone making that kind of money. If he didn't demand that kind of money we could've gotten guys to help him.

He carried the team for what? 3/4 good years. He's been a great goalie but it's not like the Habs were perennial contenders with him. They had 4 good regular seasons (2013, 2014, 2014, 2017), and snuck into the playoffs in 2011/2021

They'd be operating with a $10M competitive disadvantage under the cap while others are going $10M over the cap. Hard to compete with a $20M gap.
His contract was structured to ensure he gets his money regardless of situation.
If he really wants to chase a cup, he can agree to mutual termination, but that's a lot of money to throw away.

Montreal can meet him halfway and offer retention, but he has to prove healthy and competitive to entice a trade. They owe him an opportunity, but not a get out of jail free card.

i suppose retention is fair but it doesn't make price marketable. given the habs retool i dont think it makes sense from them to pay a 3rd team picks/prospects for another 50% retention to get him to a cup competitor.

it just sucks seeing a player with his talent have his career waisted by bad management. hoping mcdavid doesn't fall into the same trap it would be shame to see him never win a cup. oilers are tending up tho.

Healthy Price with retention and/or a bad contract coming back. Especially if he only has a year or two left in his knees, where his new team would get LTIR relief to escape the end of his deal.

Agree though. Such a waste. So many wasted draft picks and bad direction. Never truly had a 1C or played a possession game, along with years of struggles on special teams.
