This makes a ton of sense,

I could easily see Seattle taking 9 mil + in Cap to have even more of a crowd on their wing,
(and giving up picks on top of that, because cap space is kinda dirt cheap in the market right now)

Also, I can see why Seattle would want 2 years of Myers @ 6 mil instead of just offering Klingberg a deal

I believe Pearson will be harder to move than Myers, there has apparently been a fair amount of interest in Myers but Vancouver's asking price is too high. Without an addition coming in he isn't really expendable for the Canucks.

As for Klingberg, I think the longer this drags out the more like he is to sign a shorter deal. If he does sign a short deal I'm betting it is a place he likes and a place he will have significant opportunity to have a good year going back into UFA.

I always find it comical when someone says something along the lines of "Why wouldn't team X just sign player Y instead?", everything on this website is a guess/fantasy/idea . Maybe player Y doesn't like team X, maybe player Y wants to be in a certain market, maybe player Y wants to play for a playoff team or a contender, maybe player Y doesn't like a certain coach, maybe player Y likes a certain coach etc etc etc... No one knows, that's why people make AGM's...

Hoglander > Roy

I agree with both your posts. With that said, I'm not sure Vancouver gets one if they get a young RD like Fabbro and a 1st though.

I think Hoglander has higher upside than Roy but I think Roy is currently the better player. Roy also fits a need for Vancouver as a right shot 3C.

Oh for sure Roy is currently the better player, but I'd rather bet on Hoglander's upside than make a dive for Roy at this time. I'd rather flip a 2nd rounder for Roy if he's driving a hard bargain in Vegas. Roy checks off so many boxes for the Canucks beyond being a right-handed defensive oriented center that I wouldn't mind committing some decent money and term with him

I would also prefer to trade a 2nd over Hoglander. If Vegas were to take that then for sure, but I would think someone not in the division would match or already has offered a 2nd. I could be wrong.

I mean it’s not like Vegas is completely out of cap space. They still have 6.5M left, but they do still have to sign 5 players, probably some league minimum will be in there as there 21-23 roster guys. Unless Roy holds out for 3+ million it’s not impossible for Vegas to resign him if they want to keep him.

Again, I make the trade based on team need and that Roy plays a higher value position. I would peg it at probably 50/50 whether Hoglander becomes a better player, though Roy is also still improving.

How is Roy still improving? The guy is 25, he literally just entered his prime

Why not? He has only played 163 NHL games, last year was his first year playing full time in the NHL, his numbers improved significantly, and he plays behind a deep roster in Vegas, he was a late pick which usually means the player has to wait much longer to get prime opportunities, plus he's younger than Miller was when he came to Vancouver.

Miller had played 341 games before he came to Vancouver, was a high pick, and although he played behind a deep roster in TB he still had opportunities with the team as well as opportunities with the NYR.

I'm not saying Roy is going to be anywhere near Millers level, but you asked how Roy could still be improving as he is supposed to be in his prime. Roy meets all the "criteria" for a late bloomer, Miller did not.

Vegas's roster doesn't look too terribly deep anymore. I honestly think Roy's ceiling is a quality 3C, which is what he is now. I don't see Roy becoming a 2C when he's in his late 20's. I think long-term, he's worth 3.25-3.5M, at least that's the most I would give him per-season at this point in time. I don't know if Vegas will give him a 5-6 year deal in that AAV range (not sure they have the cap to do so either)
