Description
There's been a fair number of ACGM's involving Miller or Garland for Severson and assorted pieces, but the other option that could still make sense is Garland for Marino. There's been rumors aplenty of NJD's interest in Garland and VAN's interest in Marino when he was in PIT. I know it's very unusual to deal a guy so quickly after acquiring him, but maybe it was an option that Devil's management wanted all along if they still had an eye on extending Severson. Basically a safety option until they knew they had Severson locked up.

I know it's unlikely, but it does work well for both teams.

IMO and others too, Fitz just made the best RHD in the league. Marino was a steal for us. Smith became replaceable with the new adds. We didn't have a right handed Siegenthaler. Now we do with term abd a great cap hit. Our D (without severson included) is $19M for the next 3 yrs! That includes Luke High4s and Nemec! Severson would cost us $6M per and we probably move Graves next yr. Not moving that for Garland (who I like)

Let me throw this curveball out there….instead of trying to trade Miller…extend him and trade Pettersson.

And where is the incentive for the Canucks to do that?

I think he's comparing Miller and Petterson to Severson and Marino, not in terms of skill but in terms of situation. Why would either team trade the younger, cost-controlled asset so they can extend someone who will probably have an albatross of a contract in the next couple of years?

I think recent events in Calgary are the template. They really botched it not locking him up long term.

Oh, they should absolutely trade Miller regardless what happens with Pettersson.

I'm honestly open to any possibility at this point, but I'd have much higher expectations about the trade return for Petey than Miller. The only way it would really make sense is if VAN can get back a young top flight RHD, but I just don't see a lot of those becoming available.

I mean, the Canucks still have the opportunity to sign Petey a year before he's eligible for a new contract. The Flames didn't do that (not that they necessarily could if Tkachuk didn't want to commit a year in advance). Hard to say how it will play out with Petey

Emphasis on the word "probably". Until Miller signs a deal, he's not a lock to be bound to an albatross contract. We have to stop acting as though it's a foregone conclusion, because it's not

Nothing is a lock, but all the signs are there for his next contract to be rough. He will be 30 when he signs so he knows it may be his last chance to cash in, he plays the type of game that is typically unsustainable into the mid-30s, and his level of production has been all over the place throughout his career. Now that it is a contract year he will probably produce similar to last season but that type of production doesn't seem like it will last.

He could be the exception to all of these factors but that is very unlikely and has to be at the back of any team's mind as they look to sign him.

How does he play the type of game that doesn't age well? You've given no basis for that argument

Miller plays like a power forward. That puts a lot of stress on the body that will inevitably catch up to him in his 30s in a way that it won't for more finesse players. That is aside from any injuries which will speed along the deterioration in play. Additionally, as the league gets younger and faster, I believe he will start to have a harder time keeping up in year 4 and beyond of that deal.

He will be 30 as a UFA meaning he is probably looking at this as his last chance to cash in. That equates to a long-term deal of 6-7 years which will make him 36/37 at the end. The number that I am seeing thrown out there is anywhere from $8.5-9 million. With everything that I said above, I have a hard time predicting he is anywhere near an $8.5 million player in the later half of that deal.

Maybe the cap explodes in the next 4 years and 8.5 million seems like nothing. Or, there is a chance his body does hold up over 5-6 years and he doesn't slow down during that time. I hope that is the case but I don't want NJ making that bet, especially for significant assets because it will most likely end up like the Seguin situation.

Yeah, I understand being apprehensive of making such a bet, but on the ice, Miller plays nothing like Barclay Goodrow or Blake Coleman. He doesn't throw the body to anywhere near the same extent as those two guys do

I'll admit, I don't follow Miller's game a ton so I can only really go off of what those like Marek, Friedman, and a couple of scouts say about how he plays. Although it doesn't have to be barrelling towards guys and throwing big hits, even being overly physical in board battles and in front of the net can start to wear on players. The biggest point for me is I'm not the biggest fan of giving a 30-year-old that much money to play on a team that is at the very least 2 years away from making real noise in the playoffs.

Yeah, well I don't think Miller is ready to concede giving up on a long-term contract the way Klingberg just did
