Interesting. I'd rather have the guy with the highest ceiling, but I honestly don't know who that is out of the two.

If the Devils can get JT without giving up draft capital, it's a major win; but my guess is Van will want a protected 2023 or 2024 first

I’d take Walsh. Im not high and Makhamudullin and I think Walsh would be a better fit

If this deal is contingent on one (or both) guys signing extensions, then it probably wouldn't happen as neither are RFAs, Severson at the very least would probably want to see his fit in Vancouver before even negotiating a deal. Miller might be more willing to secure a long-term deal based off his last season.

Miller (w/ or w/o extension) for Severson (w/o extension) + prospect/young player+ a protected 1st is much more likely if there is a deal to be made.

Don't know about that. Hockey players usually chose security over the possibility of more money.

For Miller it would be security over possibility if he signs now, so I see him willing to sign a 7-year deal now. I don't think NJ would want to sign him at his ask right away, perhaps they would find common ground but still lowers the chances of the trade happening if it's contingent on that. As for Severson, I don't see Vancouver offering him something that he wouldn't refuse because it provides him with security.

If it's just that they get permission to see what they would want, then that would increase the chances of a trade.

Walsh is the analytics darling and more heady player. Probably plays more of a Nick Leddy-ish game (but a righty). Great on rush, great catching up. Moves puck well in o-zone.

Mukhamadullin is all tools...size, skills, skating package. He is really hard to comp since so much of his game is not 'by the book' so it appears undisciplined mess to some, genius to others.

Considering some of the former NJD analytics staff are now with Vancouver, I could see them making the same Walsh>Mukhamadullin call. But I also think Mukhamadullin carries a top-pair ceiling, but more of a boom/bust prospect.

I don't think Miller would be a guy NJD looks to sign long-term. We are still a very young team, building around guys who are 18-23 now.

My guess on Severson is that he would look for term over $$. 7 years at around $6.5 million probably does the trick.

Yeah, with Palat signed. I'm not sure why Miller to NJ is even a rumor. I don't see either playing in the bottom six.

If Miller is too old, then why did you guys sign Hamilton and Palat? Hamilton is the same age as Miller, and Palat is even older

Have both for 6-years, not 9-years. But also, only so many guys to fit. We have other mouths to feed too.

Whoa, no guarantee that Miller gets an 8 year deal on an extension. He's probably only going to get 5-6 years worth of term on his next deal

I just don’t see how he would fit once our young guys. Hit their RFA years. Cap will be super-tight.

For sure, but it depends who you move out, although Tatar and Johnsson are coming off the books next off-season

Miller should get a 7 year extension (until he's 36) amd with this year that would make it 8, still could be problematic.

I wonder though who would be left off the PP if they were to add him between Miller, Palat, Hughes, Hischer(assuming he plays there), and Bratr. Does Jersey run two lines?

I'll bet a 7th year of term works to keep the cap hit down somewhat

Palat or Sharangovich would move down to the 3rd line

Even without adding anyone, we still bump up against cap in a couple of years. The Tatar, Johnson, Graves salaries will mostly go towards raises for Severson, Sharangovich and smaller RFAs next summer. Even if we move out Severson and use that $$ towards someone like Miller, we would still have to start moving out salary in a couple of years for 2024 RFAs (Mercer, Foote) and 2025 RFAs (Holtz, Nemec)

2022-23: $73.6m
+ $7m (Bratt)
+ $5m (Wood, Zet, Tyce)
- $4m (Bernier LTIR)
=$81.5m

2023-24: $81.5m
- $13.3m (Graves, Tatar, Johnsson, Haula)
+ $2.7m (raise for Sharangovich)
+ $2.4m (raise for Severson)
+ $1.0m (Raise for Blackwood)
+ $0.6m (Raise for Boqvist)
+ $0.9m (Raises for Bastian, McLeod)
+ $1.0m (Raises for Walsh, Bahl, Dugan)
+ $2.7m (ELCs to fill out roster)
= $80.5m

2024-25: $80.5m
- $1.1m (Smith)
+ $3.0m (Raise for Mercer)
+ $1.0m (Raise for Foote)
= $83.4 million

2025-26: $83.4m

I mean, a Miller trade would basically have to involve Severson coming back the other way at this point I guess. I forgot Haula is with the devils, and he comes off the books next season too
