This is what's going to happen.

Ottawa and Montreal won't trade for either Huberdeau or Weegar.

Instead, they'll wait until they are both UFAs and they'll just sign them without giving up any assets.

But if Calgary is missing the playoffs next season and need to rebuild by selling everybody off, these would be the types of pieces I would ask for them.

Heh. If Calgary did that, they'd run the entire organization out of town on a rail.

      I think they already did.

Given that Huberdeau and Weegar are only rentals.

Well, for now they are, in quotation marks. They do still have a whole year to ink new deals. But actually, no, lots of Flames fans are running around NFL-style taunting.

Sutter won't move on from Lewis after all these departures, he's more than likely giving Lewis a letter.

This all depends on a number of factors,

If Calgary is out of the playoff race, and Weegar is analytically one of the best at his position he could yield a top prospect, a roster player and a 1st, even as a rental. In this scenario, if say Artem Zub knock on wood gets injured and Ottawa is near a playoff spot, the could be adding a 1st, along with Grieg and another player in a trade. Same with Huberdeau. If he's on a 100 point pace again and there's a contending team who needs a bit more scoring, they could sacrifice a top prospect, a roster player and a first rounder even if it's for 20 games.

Montreal got a first round pick for Ben Chairot for God's sakes. Overpayment and sacrifices of valuable prospects happen all the time at the deadline.

I think they're gonna throw 10.5-11.5x8 at Huberdeau. Just a ton of money with NMC and likely filled with signing bonus.

Weegar is a tougher one to predict the number, but I think he's far more likely to sign.

I'm not confident that Huberdeau will sign, but he just had 115pts he will never have more bargaining power, if it's money he wants. While it must be a kick in the gut leaving Florida, he didn't have Calgary on his no list so that's something I suppose.

I think the Flames learned from Gaudreau and if it's not getting done, they should pivot.

Every single GM in the NHL knows that Huberdeau does not want to play in Calgary so they can either trade him for basically nothing or lose him for absolutely nothing. Calgary is NOT in a good position at all no matter how the fans try to spin it into a win with the Tkachuk to Florida trade.

For the montreal deal make it montreals 1st and top 3 protected
And for the sens deal, make it a 1st top 5 protected.

I would do it to kick off the rebuild if you dont feel like they will sign

Huberdeau and Weegar are likely not going to both get traded if Calgary is in contention, if they do though, Huberdeau will probably not go to Montreal unless they are in contention, and Ottawa wouldn't get Weegar unless he was cheap or if they were in contention and then they would give a first of this year and a 3rd, not a good prospect.

If MTL were trading for Huberdeau they would be sending back one of those 5m contracts.

Trading Greig is an absolute nonstarter given the uncertainty around those two. I was pretty against it in the first place because I think he's going to be a very good Ottawa Senator, but if things go south he's Ottawa's best hope of replacing Formenton internally and their only hope of replacing Batherson internally.

Pretty obvious. It's no different than the Chiarelli Hall for Larsson trade. All day long Chia was shopping Hall for a D man and was getting hard balled and then right at 1:50 he settled for Larsson and pulled the trigger and Hall won NHL MVP the following season. Every GM is obviously licking their chops at a chance to steal Huberdeau from Treliving.

I mean as obvious as this trade, johny going to Columbus or bjorkstrand for a 3rd and 4th.

Far crazier things happen then Huberdeau wanting to stay in calgary.

Maybe he had his fun in the sun and now wants to play on a competitive team in a hockey Crazy market.
No one knows at this point.

You're probably not far off on a lot of this, but a couple notes.

1 - Hubes only has an 8 team NTC. So the no list is pretty exclusive.

2 - The difference with Gaudreau is he didn't have the weight of being what they got in a Tkachuk trade. Triveling really needs to either win the Cup this season, get these guys extended or get terrific value in TDL trades, which ain't gonna be easy.

If he's available, Calgary could retain 40-50%, and the return will be huge. Even without retention, any contender that misses out on the Kane sweepstakes will be in on Huberdeau. I would expect teams to give at least a good prospect+1st for him as a rental at 5.9m or worst case 1st, 2nd and 3rd in next years draft (which has the potential to yield CGY 2 first round talent supposedly).

Neither of them have yet suited for the team and probably don't know if they are interested in signing in Calgary yet. So, what's the rush in trying to predict potential destinations/trades for them?
