Im sure that was their first choice but it most likely cost too much to give up.

My hunch is it would’ve costed us our first and some more. Jarmo was genially sad when discussing the trade. And made it known that cap space is “very very very very very expensive”.

you don think gus could have been moved? even if you have to give up a second or something to ditch him it would have been worth it

I think he should've been able to be moved. But the price is obviously really high. At least the Team gets assets back and will also have more cap space next year because of this move.

I think the ask was a first along side him, and the Jackets' first next year could still be a top ten pick.

what about a buyout and moving jake bean? haven't done the math but it seems like it would be pretty close to the cap

I'm starting to suspect the ask was Texier and the 2023 first to move Nyquist. That or one of their 1st round picks from the last 2 years and another first. I think Jarmo was right to take the deal he could before other teams cave on paying the price to dump cap. The price will only get higher and higher as the little space there is around the league dries up.

Can't buyout at this point. The window is closed, and since the Jackets have no one in arbitration, they can't use the exception buyout either.

We all assumed Nyquist and Bean were the likely candidates to move. We were devastated to be wrong.

Only way to get a buyout window back would have been to get Laine to file for arbitration, go through the hearing, sign him for the same deal they did and then buy out Nyquist. Viable on paper, but absolutely toxic for a GMs reputation around the league. Putting a respected veteran like Nyquist into a position where he's scrambling to find a job a month after the UFA window opened and teams are mostly settled would have been deplorable.

WPG in need of a Nyquist type. Or even just the same trade to SEA with Nyquist instead. Anything except what Jarmo actually did.

Winnipeg had $14.5M left for 6 players at the time. Taking Nyquist would have given them less than $9M for 5 more guys and they were working on a Dubois trade at the time (and possibly still are) that they likely needed cap space to absorb the roster players they would have gotten in return.

And what if Seattle declines? You can’t just MAKE them take the trade.

We don’t know what was offered by either side, so you can’t say they should’ve just paid a second when the price was likely much higher than that. What if Jarmo offered them a 1st and a 2nd to take Nyquist and they still said no? How far do you go? Two firsts? You just don’t know what SEA were willing to do.
