FLA fans - is Cole Schwindt a good prospect? What do you see as his potential?

Was the trade theoretically for a signed @ 8x$9.5 Tkachuk, or for his signing rights?
The thread topic on this and the Tkachuk signing thread are contradictory.

If the Flames signed the contract then this trade needs to be tweaked to reflect that. Sign-and-trades are pretty rare in the NHL wherein the player signs the deal with the team their leaving; usually they sign with their new team.

Perhaps it had something to do with the arbitration filing by the Flames? There are probably some CBA experts on here that can comment better.

CapFriendly listed themselves as the "source" for the signing information so not sure if there is a 3rd party confirmation.

The NHL.com news brief says: "Tkachuk, who was a restricted free agent, agreed to terms on an eight-year contract with Florida that takes him through the 2029-30 season. Financial terms were not disclosed."

I know Huberdeau’s a UFA this upcoming year but like why? You’ve just traded a good complimentary 1st pair D a 1st and Cole Schwindt to get someone with more term as a 1st line winger

They both are upcoming FAs. Good chance both are on a different team next year.

Win for Calgary if they can re-sign Weegar and/or Huberdeau. I'm assuming the Panthers made this trade because they couldn't.

I think it's only really a big W for Calgary if they trade both at the deadline.

Giving huge extensions to Huberdeau at 30 years old & Weegar at 29 would be rough.

Even if Calgary trades Weegar/Huberdeau, they should easily rake in a fortune for them, as long as both are not lost for nothing, Calgary wins this easily

The knee jerk reaction is Florida got fleeced. The more I think about it this is really isn’t bad. Both Huberdeau and Weegar are both UFA go to the highest bidder after this year so they are rentals. Without team control the value of these players is vastly diminished. So other than this year, they gave up a prospect and a 1st (late round probably). If Calgary can get something at the trade deadline for them it tips in their favour.

Problem is FLA is 3 Mil over the cap with RFAs to sign and will probably have to move out another contract.in a Cap Dump which may cost more still.

Also concerned with FLAs defensive depth now.

Signing Huberdeau and Weegar is always going to be easier than resigning Gaudreau and Tkachuk - two americans who never wanted to play in Canada to begin with. The fact they didnt demand a trade out of Calgary earlier was probably due to the Tanev/Markstrom signings that made them a top team to compete for a cup.

Losing Gaudreau for nothing was terrible...getting so much from Florida for Tkachuk..is a huge win.

It's an 8 year deal. Florida would only have been able to sign him to 7 because they didn't hold his rights when the deadline passed. Calgary had to sign him to 8, which they did to maximize the return. He signed in Calgary with the understanding he was being traded.

Fair deal imo. On paper it looks bad, but it’s pretty clear Florida management received indication from huberdeau and Weeger that they both wanted to test the market next summer. After watching guys like Panarin, tavares, Gaudreau, etc. walk for nothing, Florida couldn’t risk that with huberdeau.

In an ideal world huberdeau would’ve signed an extension in FLA but that doesn’t seem like it was happening. Now Florida has tkachuk locked up for 8 seasons. They made lemonade out of lemons.

As for Calgary, they can either:
#1- convince Weeger and/or huberdeau to resign
Or
#2- trade them at deadline for an absolute haul.

I honestly think this is a win win trade given the context

How was Florida allowed to trade the conditional 2025 1st rd pk they traded to Philadelphia?
If Florida happens to get a top 10 pick in 2024, the FLA 2024 1st Rd Pk they traded to Philadelphia becomes the FLA 2025 1st Pk...

What happens then?.....because CGY just got the FLA 2025 1st Rd pk..is the Conditional pk status therefore waived and Philly gets the 2024 pk even if it is top 10?

This trade makes me sick. Florida seriously just gave up the better player as well as a #1 defenseman, a 1st round pick, and a prospect. Absolutely mind-boggling.

The reason Calgary signed Tkachuk was to enable Florida and Tkachuk to get the 8th year. If the contract was signed after Tkachuk became Florida's property, the max Florida could sign Tkachuk to would be 7 years. They would have to wait until after the trade deadline to be eligible to sign Tkachuk to an 8 year deal. That would present an immense risk for both sides since they would have to sign a 1 year deal, and then a 7 year extension January 1st. Or, they could sign a 1 year deal, and an 8 year deal after the trade deadline, for 9 years total. Either way, it presents an immense risk because with a 1 year deal, there would be nothing binding either Florida or Tkachuk to a long term extension, and either side could change their mind.

There is obviously the risk that Calgary could back out from the deal after Tkachuk signs for the sign and trade, but something like that would be a career killer for a GM. No player or agent would trust the GM or the organization ever again, which would make conducting business very difficult.

In short, Tkachuk technically signed an 8 year extension with Calgary last night, and was immediately flipped to Florida after the extension was signed. But for all intents and purposes, Florida likely negotiated the actual extension since they were the one who would keep the extended player.

Precisely why Florida traded them. In the unlikely event that Calgary can get both signed before free agency next summer to reasonable deals, they win the trade. But the odds are against that... no idea why so many think this is a slam dunk win by CGY.

because they lost Gaudreau for nothing and Tkachuk didn't want to resign, and somehow they still managed to come out of this offseason with a potential W.

IMO the odds are low that this is a W for Calgary. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Huberdeau is on another team this time next year... there's even a possibility that he's on another team this time next month, and one media guy reported that Treliving is already taking calls on Huberdeau.
