All jokes aside, this trade actually makes sense from a Florida standpoint because it was highly unlikely that they could keep Huberdeau and Weegar after next season, and they receive an elite young power forward locked up on an 8 year deal to play beside Barkov for them. Giving up another 1st and solid prospect isn't the most logical move though.

Calgary of course gets Huberdeau to hopefully try to pick up where Gaudreau left off, and Weegar to solidify their top 4 D core. Plus a first round pick and great prospect in Schwindt creates a perfect return for the flames. Now only time will tell who wins this trade in the long run once we see what's left of Huberdeau and Weegar for 23-24 for Calgary.

Does Weegar even make that top 4? Not trying to downplay him but the Flames have a solid group at defense: Hanifin-Andersson; Kylington-Tanev; Zadorov-Weegar? Maybe Weegar bumps Kylington down but I'd say it's closer than people think.

Since when is Schwindt a great prospect lol?

He said "solid". Decent sized right handed two way center. Good chance he ends up as a 3/4 defensive C.
Nothing to get too excited about, but you need those guys as well.

I think they end up moving Weegar to Ottawa later this week for something like a protected 2023 1st Round Pick, Alex Formenton, and Nikita Zaitsev. Ottawa still needs a top 4D. Moving Zaitsev's money is likely a bottleneck. If Calgary plans on flipping Weegar, they likely have an idea from Florida about what Ottawa was willing to do. Calgary can take Zaitsev, Florida could not. That likely changes the dynamic of a Weegar to Ottawa trade and might put it back on the table.

I doubt Huberdeau re-signs there. Offers usually are not strong in these kind of situations. They will get another 1st and a prospect for Huberdeau, probably at the trade deadline.

If they end up accumulating three first round picks and a couple of lesser picks and prospects, that is a good return given that teams almost never get anything good selling off UFAs who are selective abotu where they will sign, and do not want to stay. If they by some chance end up extending Huberdeau, then the trade is a blessing for Flames fans, who otherwise are looking at a bunch of futures with no reasonable chance of panning out as stars.

I would guess that this trade isn't an indication that Huberdeau wouldn't re-sign with the Panthers. They probably felt that Tkachuk was too important and unique to pass up on. They cannot afford both Huberdeau and Tkachuk anyways, so he had to be in the deal. I wonder if we hear over the next few days that being traded away caught Huberdeau by surprise. Maybe both sides even talked about what an extension would look like, and he thought they were progressing.

He literally said great what are you even talking about lmao

"Plus a first round pick and great prospect in Schwindt"

He's a 21 year old former 3rd round pick with 40 points in 72 AHL games. That's very meh. Like maybe a 4th liner?

Calgary very like wins this season, but if Calgary can't sign these two and they walk, then they lose. On the other hand, if they flip them at the deadline, they might win no matter what.

Sorry, he did indeed. There were two sentences about him. One said solid, the other said great.
Not all 3rd/4th liners are equal and he's shaping up to be a very good one.

So... 1 American superstar Nhl'er is worth 1 Canadian superstar and 1 Canadian Top 4 Dman and one 1st Rd pick.

Take a note Dubas. Matthews will be next.

It is impossible to judge this trade right now. What if Hubes and/or Weegar leaves next summer? That happening totally changes the equation. And I hope it does happen.

Exactly. The kid played bottom 6 minutes in the AHL and put up 40 pts with no PP time. That aint bad.

Calgary right now got better and Florida became weaker. But long-term who knows, too early to tell.

CGY still lost an enormous future asset...just enough flair in this deal to make Flames fans buy-in and forget that they just lost Tkachuk and Gaudreau. Panther 100% won this deal.

This trade is banana's. Like actual banana's. This entire offseason has been banana's.

I think NHL GMs actively read the comments on the ACGM's on this site and say "Oh, you all think you know what we're gonna do next right? Ok... predict this, you son of b*****!"

I read that as if every GM is talking in a Tony Montana style voice.

As for this trade, its banana's. Like actual banana's.

Lots of people jumping on the Calgary train in this thread. So what happens when both players walk in UFA and theyre left with just the 1st rounder?

Weegar is a damn, damn good defenseman. I would say he potentially has one of the best value aavs in the league.

Win for Calgary if they can re-sign Weegar and/or Huberdeau. I'm assuming the Panthers made this trade because they couldn't.
