I was considering doughty and bob but I liked both of their performances this past season. Nurse I want to give another chance to but let’s see it play out.

Doughty was the best player on the Kings until he got injured. He bounced back once the team was actually competitive.

Lucic and Monahan are bad but like they'll be gone in a year. Doughty and Bob were better-even good- but they are signed deep into their thirties and have way more opportunity to do age related damage. Good players can perform well and still be on bad contracts. Jones and Karlsson also had solid years this year yet made the list

How the hell is Burns on here? Consistent 50 pt RHD on a garbage SJ and MIN teams during some of his time, not to mention now at a reduced hit, and all without sacrificing any other aspects of his game? I get his age isn’t ideal, but he is still easily worth 8mil for what he brings. His offensive and defensive game, and he munches minutes. I mean, last year alone he was 3rd in the league for TOI among defensemen, only behind Chabot and I don’t remember the other dman ahead of Burns. He has aged like a fine wine, and now that he is playing for a true contender, personally, I think he revived his play to the level he had in 2016-17 season. Not everyone will agree with this, but I digress.

He is paid 8 mil for the next 3 years. Sure it’s not all by one team but being paid 8 mil till you’re 40 is kinda not good

Tavares is the 45th highest point producing forward in the league. If he was being paid what the 45th highest paid forward in the league is currently getting he would be getting 7.25m. On a purely linear metric, where the top point producing forward should paid the most out of forwards and the 45th should be paid the 45th. If you want to get into advanced stats like WAR and xWAR then I’m all ears but it doesn’t improve Tavares’ case for being grossly overpaid.

under this logic you'd need to put guys like kopitar and wheeler on here as well since they were under tavares in point producing

if fact if we're looking at point production and nothing else, here's a list of players who costed more per point than tavares: tatar, palmeri, lee, w karlsson, josh anderson, pacioretty, kotkaniemi, oshie, tanev, schwartz, mantha, couturier, stone, zucker

one would assume that none of these contracts were signed in a vaccum, that the status of the player on signing varies and often for players signing as free agents, they are paid with a significant focus on past performance rather than expected production. a good majority of players you've listed are in this category since their production and over play as dramatically fallen off since they've signed their respective contracts, but tavares in a bad year was almost point per game. he's clearly a cut above the rest of these guys.

is tavares overpaid? sure, there's an argument there. is his contract among the twenty worst in league? not a chance.

My rebuttal to that is the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Say Tavares was the highest paid player and produced like the 50th best player based solely on PPG. That difference is over 5m. The difference between the 50th highest paid player and 100th is 1.5m. From a standpoint of being overpaid, Tavares is one of the largest wastes of money in the league with him being overpaid 3.75m. Every single player you mentioned before Tavares is objectively not as good of a hockey player and are on objectively overpaid contracts. None of them are costing their team damn near 4 million to keep them around. I am also accounting for the fact that Tavares has 3 more years of that which costs the team assuming he continues to play like that 11 million. To compare I’ll use kotkaniemi. KK will continue to improve as he will be playing in an elevated role with another year of development so I don’t see his cap hit to be as bad as it is on paper. On paper though, KK is the 135th highest paid forward and the 198th most effective forward. The 198th highest paid forward makes 2m less however. Now on paper it’s a 16 million dollar mishap but the fact that they pay it over the course of a much longer period of time where he will still be improving makes it much better that it actually seems. Every forward that gets a raise over 4.82m continues to make it a better deal. Not many forwards are signed over 11m, 3 to be exact. I don’t see 42 players signing over 11 million dollar deals in the next 3 years. I do however see 63 forwards signing over 4.82 million dollar deals over the next 8 years. That’s 8 forwards getting a pay raise over 4.82 per offseason, and that is assuming KK plays like he did in his fourth line role. It all comes down to the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Even tho Tavares slips from 4 to 45, he loses his team 3.75m a year despite the fact he is near PPG. That’s why I view his contract as so bad, because it will cost the leafs millions and they are already struggling to build a team around their core 4.

Give Nurse another chance but jones had a really good season. He's barely overpaid. Maybe by a mil aav

Had to take a look at the RWs around the league because I thought there must to be someone on a bigger, worse contract than Kassian. It's actually surprising how well the RWs around the league perform in comparison to their contracts. Very few guys you could really say are overpaid at all.

Hey man, Toews put up 12 goals last season, but he helped the hawks win 3 cups. Doughty won 2, and has similar underlying numbers to Seth Jones, if he's overpaid it's not at the level of worst contract in the league any longer.

Comparing doughty to other overpaid players just probes my point.
