Extensions for Lafreniere and Miller

Description
Lafreniere:
Nathan MacKinnon (7 years @ 8.63% of Cap Ceiling)
Aleksander Barkov (6 years @ 8.26% of Cap Ceiling)
Nikolaj Ehlers (7 years @ 8% of Cap Ceiling)
Dylan Larkin (5 years @ 7.67% of Cap Ceiling)
Elias Lindholm (2 years at 3.78% of Cap Ceiling; followed by 6 years at 6.1% of Cap Ceiling) (tot. 8 years 5.52% avg)
Sam Bennett (2 years @ 2.6% of Cap Ceiling; followed by 2 years @ 3.13% of Cap Ceiling) (tot. 4 years 2.865% avg)

Miller:
Seth Jones (6 years @ 7.4% of Cap Ceiling)
Rasmus Ristolainen (6 years @ 7.4% of Cap Ceiling)
Josh Morrissey (2 years @ 3.96% of Cap Ceiling; followed by 8 years @ 7.67% of Cap Ceiling) (tot 10 years 6.928% avg)
Noah Hanifin (6 years @ 6.23% of Cap Ceiling)
Zach Werenski (3 years @ 6.14% of Cap Ceiling)
Mikhail Sergachev (3 years @ 5.89% of Cap Ceiling)
Nurse (2 years @ 4.03% of Cap Ceiling; followed by 2 years @ 6.87% of Cap Ceiling) (tot 4 years 5.45% avg)

If the cap goes up to 83.5m next year:
Larkin's % would lead to a 6.4m/8yr contract for Laffy. While this has 3 more years, Larkin did better prior to signing and was a center.
Assuming Miller gets the avg of Werenski & Sergachev for 5 years (5.89/2 + 6.14/2 = 6.015% of Cap Ceiling) = ~$5,000,000.00

Essentially, these deals would mean that Chytil, Kravtsov, and probably Jones are all traded away for other picks or cost effective prospects. It also means that NYR are going to need a significant jump the following year in order to fit in extensions for Kakko, Schneider, and to a lower extent Lindgren and Robertson. I would expect that Lundkvist and a 1st are gone at the 2023 TDL in order for the rangers to make moves for the playoffs (JT Miller, Pastrnak, or another rental at the deadline).

Why not bridge one of the two?
It seems reasonable to me that K'Andre Miller's next contract will resemble that of Ryan Lindgren.

You're going to give $6.4M to a guy with career highs of 19g and 31p? You shouldn't be giving out extensions based on a player's position in the draft. Any more than $3.5M for Lafreniere is too much based on his body of work thus far.

Y'all better hope one of them is bridged, because that bottom 6 is AHL material.

The cap is going to absolutely screw this team - Trouba and Panarin specifically (and Kreider, despite his outstanding year this past year).

Laf probably won't get close to this much unless he goes off. Also Trouba can be traded to clear cap. Goodrow too.

Highly doubt Laf considers 8 years unless he is over a ppg this year and if he does it will be way more than 6.4.

If he gets close to .5 ppg but still under this year I doubt he does more than 2 or 3 years and that would be probably be around 3 but may be as high as 4 if it is 3 years.

If he is between .5 and .75 ppg then he may do 4 years but that would be bad for nyr but should be closer to 5 mil.

If he is over .75 then it will probably be 3-5 years closer to your number.

NYR should try to do 3 years and line it up with the end of Trouba’s deal. That way they can spend with term on others and not have to worry about how to find cap space for Laf

Miller would be a fool to take anything resembling Lindgrens deal. He’s a stud and should be compensated as such

I mean everyone I’m familiar with felt the same way about Lindgren after 2020-21. 2021-22 was the worst of his three NHL seasons in New York yet he was, at worst, decent.

Not until 2024-25 for the former.

If you look at the compatibles I posted, none were point per game players when they signed their deals. Most had at least one 50 point season under their belt. Assuming Laffy gets somewhere from 50-60 points this season (not crazy if he gets PP1 time), I would 100% give him the 8 year deal. It has bargain written all over it over the final 4 years. Miller I would do at least 4 years. I wouldn’t do less, let Panarin and all them come off the books before he cashes in. Same with Kakkos eventual extension(s).

NYR historically have not done the long extensions for young players. Stepan, Kreider, Zucc, JT Miller, Hayes, McDonagh, Staal, Girardi all got multiple bridge deals which ended up with them pricing themselves out. Look at Tampa, Colorado, etc. Most top teams are smart to max term the players that are important to their future. I think locking up shesty only the 4-5 years was such a mistake. If he keeps it up, he will be 30 when his next max contract starts and we all see how that can pan out (lundqvist, price, etc.) when it comes to a goalie
