Description
Montreal is looking for good 25 y.o. ish RHD who play a smart 2 way game. Cost to acquire must be reasonable and you may have to take cap back to make a deal work but will be compensated accordingly if so. Order is my preference, however Schneider is only ad the bottom because it is highly unlikely he is available at all and Dumba is down there due to his cap and the cost to acquire. Who else may be available? What is their cost?

The list is just a guess at who could possibly be available IMO

Why in the world would Montreal be spending assets right now? You guys are a bottom 3 team. Acquire assets, ride out your bad contracts you can't move and start over.

We still need to fill out the RD spot, may as well get one who is still largely unproven or being pushed down/out of lineup now but has upside.

If anything they should just get Florida to include a pick with Gudas and send him over. Only one year left on his deal, protects the kids and can be a functional bottom pairing guy that plays the PK

Yeah a Hoffman for Barrie swap makes a lot of sense for the habs.

Sandin for Toronto is not a RD. He is left handed shot and badly struggled when he tried to play the right side. Big reason he is still not signed with Toronto is because of the left handed defensemen on the team already.

The Habs have no cap space and Harris is way more valuable than Barrie. Habs just want a stopgap at right d they won’t be giving up an serious prospects for it.

I would consider looking at Villeneuve. Might cost the habs a 2nd round + prospect though. What about Connor Timmins out of AZ? Drouin, half retained for CT? Habs have a surplus of wingers. JD is playing for his next deal... AZ might be the better place to do it.

harris and norlinder aren't serious prospects. likely only become #5/#6 dmen. that's fair for what barrie brings. not sure what the habs can do about the cap space tho

Really hard to say what Dumba's value would be honestly. He played the most minutes of our RD but he definitely isn't the most polished in his own zone. I think he gets more negativity about this publicly than he deserves because he certainly can be good in his own zone, but he is also prone to dumb mistakes which fans fixate on. RD that can play a lot of minutes are some of the most valuable assets in the NHL, but I don't think he'll get what the Flyers paid for Ristolainen last offseason.

I don't think the Habs are great trading partners for us anyways. I want nothing to do with Dvorak and Drouin personally. Your first is obviously off the table. I would love Dach but he's not getting moved (and he has more value than Dumba). Dadonov could be interesting if there's more coming with him but we don't really need another winger. Just doesn't seem like there's many appealing assets for us that would realistically be on the table.

obviously that doesn't work for the oilers. habs will have to send him to az or buy him out.

Just sign someone and not give up an asset, or target someone from a team that needs to clear cap

We can go the stopgap route for sure but it is much more behothing for us to get a young guy who has been pushed down or out of the lineup or who hasn't proven himself yet to grow with the rest of our core.

There aren't any quality RHD as of right now in the next draft and the draft after is questionable as well at this point. We want to be competitive in 2 years time, how else do you purpose we find a quality RHD without being able to draft one? We need to focus on guys who don't fit on their current teams rosters but have the potential upside to be a top 4 D man. Stopgap are good if you are trying to tank for 3 or 4 years while your drafted players develop but we don't have enough quality RHD prospects to go that route. We literally only have Barron and Mailloux. If Barron doesn't develop into much more than Savard and Mailloux doesn't develop into more than Wideman we are screwed. We need to add quality prospects on the cusp of being NHL players or those who are being held back by their teams.

I don't think replacing Petry next season with a stop gap is a bad idea, someone on a one year deal would be perfect.

Sell the stop gap for assets at the trade deadline and then make your move next season. Also, 2 of your listed players are UFA next year anyways. With Drouin, Dadanov, Byron gone habs should have money to acquire a free agent next year.
