I was a little surprised to see this because I expected him to stay in Calgary with his cousin there. $2.1M AAV is fair value for him, and the term seems pretty low risk to me given how consistent he’s been over the years and that it doesn’t go beyond his 35th birthday.

He strikes me as being the prototypical third-line forward, mostly a centre but I think he can also play the wing, which means they can leave Kampf at centre with Jarnkrok on the wing, with the flexibility to move him around in case of injuries. It doesn’t appear to leave much cap space to sign Engvall and Sandin, but he fills a need, and they seem to have a lot of extra depth players now so I expect they can do something with them to make this work without giving up a more important piece.

This makes me thing Engvall is on the move rather than Kerfoot.

That sounds like good logic for a team that’s supposed to be in win-now mode. So why didn’t they apply the same logic to their goaltending? They didn’t want to commit to a goalie for more than two years, and as a result they wound up spending almost as much AAV on a guy with a lot more uncertainty (assuming Campbell would have signed the same contract in Toronto that he signed in Edmonton).

I'm certain they would've signed a more proven goalie to that contract if the option existed.

For this deal - it's a yes for me.

They need guys like this who fit more naturally into the roles they need. If this means Kerfoot is moved, then I won't say that's necessarily a bad thing. Yes, we're losing on some production, but we save some money and get a guy more suited for the 3rd line.

He wasn't that great of a fit in Calgary, despite the family connection. He really dropped off offensively when he went there for some reason. Toronto could be a better fit potentially
