Wow... He got paid!

Very risky contract if this season was an outlier.

I get it's super long, but he's the player they most needed to retain to contend for a cup again next year. It's an overpay for sure, but a necessary one to keep the cup window open.
The one key UFA left that I'd seriously look at signing is Burakovsky (unless Manson wants a super cheap deal). If not, time to focus on getting Lehkonen/Sturm/Aube Kubel done.

Exactly, although we didnt qualify NAK today so hes probably gone unfortunately. I would love to be able to talk Manson into a 4x4 deal

He's a good player but he also had a career year in his Ufa year. This can work out well but he has to continue on last year's play. Instead of being a guy playing well and too good for the bottom 6 he now HAS to be a good top 6er. And they have tied their hands giving him an NMC *3 years.

I think this likely ends up looking pretty bad but we shall see

I was hoping for a bit less AAV, but I have no hesitation about him being around for 8 years. He's elite at everything except the PP, and the team has guys named Makar, MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Landeskog for that.

He had a career year last so, so if he maintains that pace, then this is a good contract.
On the other hand, if he regresses to the mean, than this will be a terrible contract for a long, long time.

Just one really good season and he gets a contract like that??? Wow, Sakic! A terrible mistake, unless he plays like last season for the next 5 seasons, at least. Otherwise, Colorado will have some serious cap trouble for many years.

How much term do you want?

Higher AAV than I was expecting but he's worth it if he plays like last season. We'll see how well it ages.

The kind of contract that the Avs deliberately didn't do which allowed them to become such a good team.

Sakic left the position right in time to admire the reactions to this awful signing hahaha.

How to bank on one good season with a 8x6+M contract. I would had let him walk.

People who are claiming he had one good season, or this is bad, haven't watched Nuke in Colorado.

Quoting: Random2152
Val has been great ever since he landed in COL. The twins ***ing nailed it.
It was only ever one good season to people who don't pay attention.

2018-19 | DAL | 57 games - 10 points = 14 point pace | Playoffs = 00 point pace
2019-20 | COL | 65 games - 27 points = 34 point pace | Playoffs = 16 point pace
2020-21 | COL | 55 games - 21 points = 31 point pace | Playoffs = 24 point pace
2021-22 | COL | 62 games - 52 points = 68 point pace | Playoffs = 62 point pace

This is the literal definition of one good season (at least statistically).
And I agree that he's always been a solid forechecker and two-way player.
But none of his other seasons warrant anything near $6,100,000 x 8 years.
Without last season his offers would be about half the AAV and half the term.

Nichushkin is 100% capable of living up to this contract.
But saying it's not based on one season is complete blasphemy.
And saying it's not risky ignores his age + many outlier contract years.

I want his agent working for me. damn.
I get that he was a huge part of the teams run...but at that price you wont be able to afford any other signings, or depth players and now repeating with him is going to be very very hard.
This was the first time hes posted over 20 goals, and theyre most likely losing Kadri, so their depth is taking a big hit. The last few two years are bound to suck, in fact I doubt there is value in this deal past 1 or 2 seasons...and they signed for 8?? yikes.

Reasonable imo, yes the stats don't show it but I expected 6 mill * 6. 200 foot warrior and key type of player to win championships.

Consider anything more than points in your eval and perhaps more will become clear. Thinking that Val is a 1 year breakout is basically outing yourself as someone who keeps their head in the box score

you pull up points only, so clearly you have no idea who the player is and what makes him so good,

Avs Cup window is wide open for the next 5+ years. I just can't possibly understand how a guy who scored 46 goals in 343 career games played prior to this season is worth a $49M gamble. How many times have we seen pending UFA's have career seasons and then take a huge step backwards the following season. This contract could go so badly so quickly and the Cup window could slam shut.

Uhm I said the he's a great forechecker, a great two-way player, and he obviously has great intangibles.

But those intangibles don't get anyone $6,100,000 x 8 years after 10 point + 27 point + 21 point seasons.

So his contract is clearly based on last years production. Unless you guys have examples to prove me wrong?
