Oilers accept

I think a more realistic trade looks like Allen for Barrie but Edmonton will take all the cap space your deal gives them

I have no clue what Allen's value could be but when there is demand it could be anywhere from decent prospect to a 3rd rounder.

Montreal would need something on the right side if they move Petry, Barrie would be a decent placeholder til Mailloux, Barron and whomever they grab tomorrow are ready.

Why on earth does carolina want Petry.... or anyone other than salary cap floor teams. He is old and overpaid.
But then again, you're actually trading FOR Tyson Barrie?? Lol..... nuf said.

Canes don’t even touch that. The only way they even would consider acquiring Petry is if Montreal retains half and another team retains half of the remaining salary. Unless that happens, Carolina can’t afford to acquire Petry.

Horrible for the caps if they do that, Lapierre has a pretty high ceiling and could be a future 2nd C

Canes pass. Don’t want an old and expensive player signed for a few more years. The droppoff has already started and inevitably will get worse. Would rather just sign TDA to the remainder of his contract.

Josh Anderson does not return a 1st (nor Nolan Foote). If he is dealt, maybe a 2nd alone or 3rd with another piece.

In this crappy season he managed 27points, much lower then usual, which puts him at 73rd in the league amongst defenseman. In the 4 seasons prior he averaged 42.5 pts per season, putting him around 30th in the league, or 15th amongst RHD. I think the top +- 10RHD are untouchable/not up to be traded.
Looking at UFA Ds you have

1.Klinberg: 47points
and….
2. Ben Chariot: 26 points .

You still need something on the right side if TDA doesn’t sign there.
This is a matter of scarcity and demand.

I wouldn’t bet that a guy in his mid 30s reverses the trajectory from last season even if the prior seasons were better than that. Especially not when it’s a multi year bet and he’ll continue to age and likely decline.

I get the scarcity and demand piece but my point is they still control tda rights and I’m sure they’re aware of the market and their needs. He’ll come back with some offers that his agent shopped and I’d rather pay him 6M per year that he might come back with versus paying that money to Petry.

You also listed Petry and 2 UFA. Petry isn’t a UFA so wouldn’t it make more sense to list trade targets? Chych would be an option I’d target, along with various others before I got to the point of going after somebody like Petry or Burns due to their age and contracts.

Petry is available same as the two UFAs. That is the comparable. You can say that you will target Chychrun but the whole point as I made in my argument is that you are buying quite low on a top15 RHD almost as a cap dump much like a freebie UFA with Petry who is still very good and led all Habs players metrics 5on5. Klingberg contract will be 10x worse when Letang just got signed til he's 41. And Chychrun will command multiple high picks at the least.

I get that but Calling Petry a top 15 RD is where I differ and based on his last season, age and contract length I wouldn’t bet that he gets back to that range even if it doesn’t cost much to acquire him. I’d rather spend more assets to get somebody who is more of a sure thing. I just don’t think there would be interest from the canes as it’s not in their MO to have players on big contracts late into their 30s. They like team control and depressed assets, but for younger players.

Lol you wont let it go. Petry is 34, top4 RHD and a legit option. Signed with term and will be cheap.

One return isnt like the other. Full Stop.

Correct. Just like you won’t let it go. I suggest the oilers go after Petry if you’re that enthralled with him. The canes don’t want to pay a 34 year old over 6M for 3 more years after he has clearly starting falling off based on his last season. I don’t think looking at his previous seasons and hoping he defeats Father Time is a good strategy but again the oilers should go after him if you’re so convinced.

I’m fine spending assets on a viable replacement instead of spending less assets to get an expensive, bad option to fill that hole. I also don’t know who the other person is that you referenced a Chych package on so not sure how that proves your point? I can go make a post with a terrible Chych package but since nobody on this site really has a clue that doesn’t really prove either of our points does it? What I can do is base a package off of another high end young player that was made just last night tho with the debrincat trade and use that as a reference point. And at that value or somewhere around it I’d gladly take Chych over Petry.

When you argue a player as volatile as TDA and as weak defensively is a stronger option than Petry. I mean, that says everything.

Slavin made him look as good as ever. Petry has been one of the best RHD in the NHL the last 5 years, the stats and metrics, all prove it.

This was a real time showing of your bias without thinking you had a need at RHD with TDA in the fold and in the span of less than 12 hrs you were proven wrong and stll don’t acknowledge the possibility of an add for Petry. He’s one of the few answers out there by way of trade or free agency.

How does my bias factor into not wanting Petry? I don’t care about Montreal or Petry. I want the canes to bring on the best option they can and Petry very clearly isn’t that. He was abysmal last year and saying he was the best player in that team is like being the tallest midget - you’re still a midget at the end of the day. In terms of impact and value TDA was much better than Petry last year, that’s not bias that’s factual.

I still would’ve rather had TDA than Petry because that worked well last year and he’s not trending straight down like Petry is which will only continue based on age curves unless a miracle happens. Thinking Petry is the only option for the canes or anybody looking for an RD shows how little you know but keep pushing that bud.

You gonna suggest Canes grab Toews next? Understanding how teams operate and what their strategy is would probably be useful when thinking of players they’d go after. Instead claiming how I’m biased is your approach. Of course if tda wasn’t in the fold they need a replacement, that’s logical. What’s not logical is pushing a mid 30s downward trending expensive replacement to a team that doesn’t target those types of players.

Tough to argue with somebody who isn’t logical tho 🤷

If Petry was traded to Carolina today, every single Canes fan here, the next day, would be saying how much of an upgrade he’d be over TDA. To deny that is delusional

How was I proven wrong? I said I wouldn’t like that deal and there are better options out there to replace tda with (who I would’ve preferred to keep at that contract). Speculation of a trade that’s hasn’t happened makes my personal opinion wrong? That’s interesting logic buddy. Keep pinning conversations to go back to though, seems like you have a lot going on in your life
