The NHLPA pursued arbitration on behalf of Evander Kane in order to have his contract reinstated and to force San Jose to honor the final years of that contract. If the Arbitrator rules against him, he will be a UFA. The stakes are high for all parties involved, especially now that the matter won't be resolved until after the free agency period begins. If he's a UFA, Kane will have fewer, and less attractive opportunities than he would have on the opening day of free agency. San Jose has to maintain enough space under the salary cap to accommodate his $7M AAV, at least until the ruling comes in. The Oilers may be forced to move on from a player who was seemingly a perfect fit.
