The Hawks just paid 19/88 their signing bonuses a few days ago. Only $2.9M in salary left for each of them. $5.8 total. Hawks eat 50%...back to $2.9M and AZ (or another team) would only be responsible for $1.45M in cash.

Gardiner is becoming healthy again so CAR will need very likely need to trade his cap hit away in order to improve on their team from last year.

Necas isn't happy right now and is a good young NHL player. Fits one of KD's asks.
Morrow is quite literally CAR's best prospect. Another ask.
The 2023 1st checks another ask.
Ponomarev is for the $3.2M in retention and eating Gardiner.

Would hope that Ottawa would rather keep those 2nds than use them on a Murray dump. I could understand if they desperately need the cap space but all indications point to that not being the case.

Would also rather see then move those 2nds in a Graves or Toews type of trade to bolster a position of weakness

I think the Carolina trade is a little light. But I could see them making a move for Cat too.

It's tough because it's light on picks for sure. Picks are something you can assign a hard value to. Even if it's a future pick...it's a kinda roughly known commodity. Once someone gets drafted it no longer matters where they we picked. So, it's more difficult to measure prospects. I'm not 100% sure if you have looked into Scott Morrow, but he's actually tracking Cale Makar's progress at the same exact school. OBVIOUSLY, we can't just translate a prospect into a guy that's literally in a class of (3) of the all-time greats with Orr and Lidstrom. I'm not trying even attempting to say he's the next Makar. As far as prospects go though...I'd much rather have Morrow than another 1st round pick.

Yeah. Morrow is a great prospect. But people make those kinds of comparisons all the time, especially when they are fans of the team that is trying to sell what a prospects value is. You didn't actually add the pick, btw. But who knows. Necas and Morrow are great prospects/players. So that might be enough value to make up for the 1st or 1st's being late.

Also, I wish we could find an LHD prospect of Morrow's caliber somewhere. Yes we have a logjam at LHD but most of them are big old question marks and mostly project as 3rd pairing/7th defensman guys with more, possible but improbable, upside.

Then again, Morrow is probably far enough away from a big payday that having both him and Jones wouldn't be too much of an issue, if Morrow does pop big time at the NHL level.

Im still just not convinced that building around a quantity of unknowns would be as good for the rebuild as building around Cat. But at the same time a clean slate and strong development could go a long way and this way a young player entering his prime like Cat can go out and win. I'm just having such a hard time reconciling trading a budding superstar right now. I'm still having a hard time reconciling not resigning Strome and Kubalik, even though I understand why. I still think that if they bring back Strome and Kub and focus on clearing space in the back end, CHI could still be bad enough in the standings to solidify a top pick next year while also increasing the value and possible return for Strome and Kub. If Kub bounces back and Strome shows play consistent with the second half of last season, they could both return something that helps the rebuild a lot more than just letting them walk. But then again, I don't know what they are asking for, it could be a numbers, lengths and terms that are just completely unrealistic for Davidson to commit anything to.
