Anderson Takes Wilsons Place

Description
Assuming that both Niklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson are on the LTIR list until January but that both are eventually coming back, here's a possible effective temporary replacement for Wilson that also adds to the roster while not affecting the Caps' draft position significantly. I've signed two minimum-contract forwards who will go back to the AHL once their roster slots are needed.

I haven't solved the questions about the bottom 2 defenders or the goaltending situation, but my main focus here was the draft trade-back. (Obviously, if Alexeyev or Iorio is ready, one of the UFA defensemen I signed is unnecessary.)

One alternative to this approach might be to get Christian Dvorak from Montreal via the same exchange. That might be a wiser course due to the possibility that Backstrom might NEVER return.

Note that once both injured forwards come back, moving Hagelin solves the resulting cap issue.

Be ready to be slaughter by Montreal fanes. Anderson for anything less than #2 OA, top prospect and 2023 unprotected 1st is an insult to Hughes.

I know. I wanted to construct a trade I thought was actually reflective of what he's really worth. The intimation that Anderson and the Calgary pick would get them anything less than #13 overall outrages half the Habs fanbase.

You have a fanbase that is hoping their franchise goalie can never play again, all of their players are worth 1sts and top prospects and everyone either signs for a discount or be traded for Drouin and Byron.

You know what's the cost to move up from 26 to 20 ? About a 4th round pick.... if a GM is desperate to get a certain player available you'll at best het a 4th and a 6th, before the draft it's cheaper ... so you basically saying anderson is worth a 4th and you saying it knowing the habs aren't looking to trade him... seriously dude

Well, it's apparent that YOU don't know what it takes to move from #22 to #20. Maybe you should look it up.

Based on reports of the league-wide interest Josh Anderson, it's more likely they get a late 1st straight up for him without sending one of their 1sts the other way.

Yeah, I can see Buffalo doing that at #28 or Arizona at #32, 34 or 36. The other teams in that stratum don't really have the cap space except for Winnipeg, and I can't see them liking Anderson.

Oh believe me I'm very familiar... that's based on value chart and yes there's a few teams that paid more because someone fell and they really wanted him but they still didn't pay much more, last year detroit traded the 23rd 47th and 137th for the 15th !!! The talent difference available between 14 and 22 is way bigger than 26 and 20

You've got a bit of a thing for MTL overpaying to move from 26 up to 20 don't you? First you try Dvorak now you're trying Anderson, so I'll just use the same logic as that deal, which was an easy no from MTL. Just last draft we saw pick 20 traded for 22 and 90, the extra 4 spots don't equal moving from pick 90 to around pick 30-40's value, which Anderson would have based on the reported interest. We also saw that moving up 7 spots to 15 cost 23 plus 48 and 138, which is slightly less than what we can assume Anderson's value at, and it moved them more spots and to a more valuable pick. Maybe Anderson and MTL 2nd (33) for WSH 1st (20) WSH 3rd (85), I don't know though, MTL would need to be pretty high on someone at 20 and be positive they wouldn't slip to 26. The deal is inadequate from the MTL side of things, considering a mid to late 2nd would be more than enough to make a 6 spot jump late in the first round, and considering Hughes lack of desire to move Anderson and the reported interest in him, he will likely fetch more than that if he's traded at all.

I have a different view of what Anderson's value is as perceived by actual NHL GMs. I could be wrong. I'm actually hoping that he DOES get traded this week, so it will put to rest this speculation about whether he's worth the second overall pick (which I saw as lately as yesterday) or the 20th.

Anderson and 26 for 20 is even crazier than the 26 and anderson for 2 (still very crazy but less)

This probably should be what Anderson's value is, but given that MTL has repordetly turned down #13 from the Isles, its not going to get him. I also think that with Wilson, Oshie, and Mantha the caps would be looking for a different profile player

I doubt he gets traded before the Kane situation resolves, as several teams looking for a power forward would likely prefer Kane (at least on the ice), and Anderson is the most likely fall back if they miss out. Just like how I'm doubtful Petry gets dealt prior to free agency, teams will look at Letang and Klingberg first and circle around to Petry once those two sign.

There have been absolutely no credible reports that Montreal turned down #13 from the Isles. Montreal loons floated the idea that because NY owned the #13 pick and also had expressed interest in Anderson, therefore the two were linked and thus Anderson = #13. Then, when nothing of the sort developed, the loons compounded the fantasy by intimating that "Montreal turned NY's offer of #13 down" because they think Anderson is worth even more than that. We've seen their madness progress from #7 to #5 to #4 to #2, in various permutations. It will be fascinating to see what they say after draft day.

I could've sworn that came from Freidman or someone actually credible lol but don't at all disagree that Habs fans are being extremely unreasonable about the return. Either way I don't really see the caps as a fit.

I think that my earlier idea of Dvorak was better, because that also covers (at least partially) the possibility that Backstrom isn't able to play this season at all.
