Pretty close for the CAT imo. Drop Shakir and add a 2023 1st. Protections would certainly be added. NJD can't risk losing out on Bedard/Michkov. The NJD probably want that too I'm thinking. Big bodied defenseman fits what they're looking for and he's developing along their timeline too.

Foote vs Holtz seems to be debatable too.

Judging by the package Chicago already turned down, I don’t think they’d say yes to Foote and a first.

I was suggesting Holtz, the 2022 1st and the 2023 1st, BUT between the two prospects....Foote/Holtz...just depends on how KD values each one.

They turned down a mid-1st, late 1st and “not great” young player (according to Friedman). I am guessing it was #16, #28, and Mittelstadt from Buffalo. Our #2 alone has a lot more value than that package and would likely seal the deal on its own (with maybe some smaller pieces added).

My guess DeBrincat isn’t traded before 2022 draft anyway so the 2oa will probably be moot.

Way, way too much. Can you come up with one trade comp, from anytime throughout NHL history, that a team has given a top-2 pick, another 1st and a top-10 prospect?

Without protections we back out and that’s not remotely close enough for DeBrincat

That's a very specific request. I'm going from memory, but I think Vincent Lecavalier. MAF doesn't quite have all the pieces and the 1999 draft is mostly picks and it's a weird 3-4 trade swap. Certainly not recently, but that's only because teams tend to want to keep their 24 year old players that have multiple 40 goal seasons already under their belt and in the bubble he was on a 50 GOAL pace, but if you could get Vincent Lecavalier...you do it. The Cat for Holtz (Or Foote) , 2022 1st, and 2023 1st with protections is reasonable.

It's usually the other way around like Eric Lindros and the Flyers, but no one's thinking that any of these guys are generational talents like a Matthews/McDavid.

I'm trying to be realistic. It is the #2 OA pick this year and with (2) potential generational talents next year....I just don't see NJD doing that. I don't see any team willing to risk TWO top 2 picks.

Lecavalier is not a comp.

Top-2 picks never get traded because of their value to bottom-tier teams. Star wingers get moved all the time.

If Devils were to move #2 pick for DeBrincat, that would be it from NJD. No additional 1sts or prospects. And Hawks would probably be thrilled. But NJD isn’t moving the pick unless something special comes along. DeBrincat is good, but there are a lot of good wingers out there.

I 100% agree that it won't be TWO top 2 picks. Especially next year. Bedard/Michkov could both be franchise altering players. I would be VERY upset if we just got Logan Cooley. That would just be stupid on the part of Kyle Davidson. You don't trade Debrincat a known product for guy you hope to be Debrincat maybe one day. #2 picks turn out to be Nolan Patrick or Nail Yakupov or Dylan Strome or Sam Reinhart too!

***EDIT*** How is Lecavalier not a comp? Debrincat's outpacing him in every mark. It took Lecavalier 5 seasons to get to the 30 goal mark and 8 seasons to break 40. Unless that's what you meant. Debrincat's actually better, but somehow, I don't think you meant that.

Was Lecavalier traded for a top-5 pick?

A top-2 pick in almost any year is likely a franchise-altering pick. Whether it’s Cooley, Wright, Skafkovsky … it would become a centerpiece to any teams rebuild.

Fine, "center piece of a rebuild" Let's do this. Draft picks can bust or simply be decent/mediocre VERY easily. Can you get a Barkov....sure, but you could just as easily get a Ryan Murray. You're completely ignoring the downside and just saying the #2 OA is a guarantee.

2000 - DiPietro / Heatly - 50%
2001 - Kovy / Spezza - 100%
2002 - Nash / Lehtonen - 50%
2003 - MAF / Eric Staal - 100%
2004 - Ovi - Malkin - 100%
2005 - Crosby / Ryan - 50%
2006 - Johnson / Jordan Staal - 0%
2007 - Kane / JVR - 50%
2008 - Stamkos / Doughty - 100%
2009 - Tavares / Hedman - 100%
2010 - Hall / Seguin - meh...75%/75% I guess. Certainly neither have been franchise altering.
2011 - RNH - Landy - same...75%/75% neither of them worthy of the #1 or #2...they're decent players
2012 - Yak - Ryan Murray - 0%
2013 - MacK - Barkov - 100%
2014 - Ekblad - Reinhart - 0%
2015 - McDavid - Eichel - 100%
2016 - Matthews - Laine - 50%
2017 - Nico - Nolan - 0%

So 7 times out of 17 years have both picks actually been worth of top 2 selections.

I appreciate the effort you put into this. But Jordan Staal, Hischier, Ekblad are or have been cornerstone pieces. Reinhart and Laine are pretty close too.

I understand people want to downsell the pick by highlighting the busts, but in reality there are more hall-of-famers in your list than busts.

And yes, if Hawks or anyone else were lucky enough to break historical norms and somehow acquire the #2 pick, that player would likely be a centerpiece for the rebuild.

But it’s all likely moot and there is no reason to think Devils are making that pick available.
