Description
After the Florida Panthers fell short once again losing to Tampa Bay Lightning in 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. From what appeared to be a "go for it year" for Bill Zito's Florida Panthers it was quite a bit of a gut punch and over all deflation as they lose to their state rivals the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second year straight. The question a lot Panther fans keep asking now is "what happens now" as this was what everyone saw as the "Cats Stanley Cup window year". General Manager Bill Zito will have his hands more than full attempting to bring his team back stronger next season but also shaping his team up for long term success; something that has not been a storyline with the Panthers over their time in the NHL. What does this team need to do to make a deep run? What does this team need to do to receive long term success? Looking at the upcoming expiring contracts and the tight cap situation it is shaping up to be a busy off-season in South Florida. Let us bring you through a Straight Out Of Sunrise - GM Takeover Part 2, and what we feel this group can benefit from moving forward. and as the off-season approaches rapidly.

- The recent news on Anthony Duclair tearing his achilles, the Panthers will place the Duke on LTIR until midway through the 2022-23 season if all goes well. This is something the Panthers could capitalize on if done correctly and using that $3,000,000 and repurposing it in the mean time.

-With Bill Zito's 2 year tenure so far with the Florida Panthers, acquiring 2 time Stanley Cup champion and veteran leader Patric Hornquist from the Pittsburgh Penguins was among one of the first he made with the Cats. Over the 2 years Horny has spent with the Florida Panthers, he has arguably been one of the best moves Bill Zito made. Giving this team an identity, being able to implicate his tremendous leadership throughout the young Panthers group. Unfortunately as Patric Hornquist has done so much good for this group, his 5.3$ M cap hit is a sharp thorn in the Panthers cap situation. It has been rumoured that the Seattle Kraken have expressed in Hornqvist and could definitely be something they pursue. A deal like this could look very similar to what we saw last year when the Panthers moved veteran defensemen Anton Stralman to the Arizona Coyotes.

This off-season there is a huge need for starting goaltenders around the league. And the Panthers just so happen to be a team desperately looking to move a starting goalie but a deal involving this individual would take some serious work. I think a team that would be very open to taking on Sergei Bobrovsky retained at 50% would be the New Jersey Devil's. The Devil's have had a bit of a falling out with their current starter in Mackenzie Blackwood and a change of scenery and a trip to Florida may do the young goalie some good, especially playing in a tandem with the up and coming Spencer Knight. This could be a very intriguing option and reasonable option for both parties and as for Buffalo it would have to be a sweet proposal for them to take on 25% but we believe it is very reasonable especially considering their current cap situation.

- Eetu Luostarainen - With this player it is quite simple, BRING HIM BACK!! Eetu Luostarainen following this season has been one of the most consistent, underrated forwards in the deep Florida offence. Bring him back at around 975k -1.2M for a 3 year term.

-Brandon Montour is an interesting case as Zito brought him in at the 2020-21 deadline and Montour has played fairly well for the most part on the 3rd defensive pairing . His contract is not all that bad either, he is just getting slightly overpaid. Montour had quite a good year considering he only just played on the 3rd pairing season long. It is just another contract that Florida Panthers could remove to attempt to bring in role players, and there are teams out there with more cap and a pressing need for a defensemen that would be willing to take on the right handed rear guard.

- Claude Giroux - Panthers veteran forward Claude Giroux was acquired from the Flyers at the 2021-22 trade deadline. With a cap hit 8 million $ the Flyers retained half in the deal so the Panthers only took on 4 million of the contract. Claude is now a UFA and has options about his future; as he is 35 years old, still an incredible 2 way forward but without a Stanley Cup. It has been rumoured that Claude may head back to either the Philadelphia Flyers or his wife's hometown of Ottawa Ontario.
Although playing in one's hometown would be a cool experience or going back to where he spent so much time playing the game he loves so much, both the Senators and the Flyers are deep in a rebuild and would likely eliminate Claude's chance at Lord Stanley. So instead I would bargain as much as possible with Claude and his representatives and attempt to make him stay for around 2-3 Million at a 1 year term.

- - The Florida Panthers are going to do some refurbishing within there depth pieces and identity.
- Resign Marchment at all costs, bring in a familiar face and big body in Nick Bjugstad. As we as bringing in grit, tenacity and depth guys such as Brett Ritchie, Scott Sabourin, and Nate Thompson

-The Florida Panthers are going to tighten up and polish the blue line. If the can find away to keep Big Ben Chiarot on the back-end for $1-1.5 M deal I'd be all for it but I'd also like Florida to move on from Montour like we mentioned earlier and use that money to sign a guy like Josh Manson. As well as depth pieces such as Michael Stone and resigning Lucas Carlson and Chase Priskie.

To top off the off-season bring back 2023 expiring contracts Jonathan Huberdeau at 9 Million for 6 years and Mackenzie Weegar at 5.5-6 x 4 years!!

So buffalo is eating 2.5 mil for the next few seasons for just giggles??

I would imagine that would take a considerably higher price than just giggles. For that long I would argue that would take at least a 1st round pick if not more.

You just asked Buffalo to shell out 10 million dollars for FUTURE CONSIDERSTIONS. Even if Buffalo did this it would cost a 1st at the least. Please remember this is a business and no one is eating 10 million over the next 4 years for nothing.

Pretty much. We would be eating 10 million dollars of real money, plus wasting a retention spot for 4 years (you only get 3 per year if you don't know). As far as doing buffalo a favor helping us get to the cap floor, absolutely nobody needs help, there's probably 20 teams just itching to give away a bad contract, and some of them are only one year. The Sabres are going to likely run into a cap crunch in a couple years, multi year cap dumps are extremely bad. Also, just to pile on here, our gm just traded for a goalie who isn't going to play again, because his cap hit was higher than the money owed. The Sabres owners seem content to be at the cap floor, now to be fair, they have in the past decided on a budget and then blown right past it, but here's the important part- they did it because Taylor hall (a prime asset) agreed to sign here. If you want the Sabres to do anything like this, you would have to offer something you absolutely don't wanna give up.
