making McDonagh work

Description
Per Elliotte Friedman the Lightning are working with McDonagh to try to find a trade partner. He definitely was a thorn in the Caps' side in his early days with the Rangers, although things have worked out nicely for both of them. From an on-ice perspective, he would be a great fit. A perfect partner for Carlson who could eat big minutes and be less gaffe-prone without being a liability on offense.

Taking on his contract at 6.75m until he is 37, however, is a big ask. Another left defenseman would definitely be helpful, but paying one that much would really eat away at their ability to address the top 6 which needs at least 1 but most likely 2 new faces. This is what I would give up for McDonagh, and what the team could look like if they decide to trade for him. Decided to switch it up and give Malkin the contract Hextall wont. This team is definitely much improved from last years and I think would comfortably make the playoffs. The wing depth, however, is really shaky and would take a huge bet on Snively's 10 game cameo not being a fluke.

Détails additionnels:
I don't think McDonagh is a negative asset yet, but he is pretty close to neutral. His age, contract, and NTC will severely limit the number of suitors, and Tampa's cap crunch also lessens the return.

Leason is a younger 13th or 14th forward who can do spot duty on any line. At the age and had the draft pedigree where he definitely could still improve, but his ceiling is a good checking 3w. Most importantly he's young and cost controlled, and could fill a useful role for Tampa.

Détails additionnels:
Oilers need a goalie and Puljujarvi is very much on the trading block. Caps throw in a third to push the deal over the line, but probably don't go much higher

Détails additionnels:
With McDonagh, Caps probably need to go cheap in goal again. Reimer put up pretty ok numbers last year, which is more than you can say of a lot of the other big name goalie options

Détails additionnels:
Not very important where Eller goes, but I like the fit in Colorado a lot. As they will most likely need to let one of their forward FAs walk, Eller comes in as a one year stopgap who kills penalties well, can provide cover at center if Newhook falters or Kadri walks, and most importantly is out of contract after next year when they have to drop big money on MacKinnon.

He could probably return more than I have here, but went light just to be safe.

We'd take the Jets 2nd Rounder rather than the third, JP is still a great player, to be honest, I'd say he's one of the best defensive forwards on the trade market today

I 100% agree JP is super underrated. Don't think Holland does though!

MCD passes, he's not waiving for any team with high taxes, Malkin to the Caps makes no sense he's no longer about the cup but cashing in big time one last time. And Malkin wants closer to $8,000,000 x 4 years.

Holland completely undervaluing young players? Couldn't be.

You are getting samsonov too in that mock trade. Supposedly, JP's value is only a 2nd or 3rd since he wants out again. There are already 4 teams in on him so he probably goes for more than what those scout suggested. A young starter+3rd isn't bad though

Yea obviously would depend on McDonagh waiving. Given that he seems at least somewhat open (based on my reading of the ESPN article) to being moved, I'm not sure how many low-tax options there are besides the Panthers. Most Caps players live in Virginia suburbs anyways rather than DC proper or Maryland, so the taxes aren't as big as you would originally think.

On Malkin once again from my read of Josh Yohe's most recent article in The Athletic, Malkin is willing to take a pay cut from 9.5m but "its more about pride than it is money for him at this point. He doesn't want to be low-balled or embarrassed by an offer." If he doesn't re-sign in Pittsburgh, I assume will be because they want him to take 5.5m and/or only 1 or 2 years. Even if his contract comes in a little higher, I still left the caps 500k to play with.

He had 7 points in 12 games last year before getting hurt which is pretty good, and I think they expect him to play next year. I also have him on the second line here rather than Sheary or Oshie to give a little more balance with McMichael at 3c. That being said, having him on the second line would not at all be ideal. They will have to have either a winger or a LD making close to the min next year, and if you get McDonagh that takes up all the cap you could give Nichuskin or Copp to play 2lw.

EDIT:
Completely forgot that Wilson is coming back in January/February too, which would mean they only really need Snively to be not disastrous until then.

A second felt a little too high and I already moved the other thirds so thats what I went for here, but definitely understand.

McD would be a great partner for Johnny C but not at full price. Can’t imagine there is a way to get retention unless it’s a three teamer

Yea I don't think its the right way to go. Would make improving the forwards this year really difficult and pretty much guarantee they wouldn't be able to keep Orlov next year.
