Agreed

If I was the wild I would have preferred maybe to get a C prospect but depending on how Rossi adapts next season probs not needed

Florida spent 28th overall and Devon Levi on Sam Reinhart.

LA spent 19th overall and Brock Faber on Kevin Fiala.

It's as fair as you can get.

Vote fair deal.

I thought the same thing about comparing them at first. But when I actually checked Fiala has outperformed Reinhart by a decent chunk pretrade

Seems a fairly light return, but the wild had handcuffed themselves so not shocking

That's because Reinhart was playing for the worst team in the league while Fiala was playing for a playoff team.

They are in the situation based on two contracts that were signed in 2012, 3 GMs ago, and 2 CBAs ago. There is no reasonable or realistic way to blame their management for those buyouts. They were going to have dead cap either way either through an eventual cap recapture penalty, or a buyout.

I cannot see a reasonable way they could keep Fiala. They basically have a cap ceiling of 68-70 million.

I understand your point and my response is, if you're the GM and you know these cap re-capture penalties/dead cap scenario is coming in one form or another, why wouldn't you do something about it early enough to get a better return for this player?

If Minnesota wanted a better return, the GM already knew what was coming... /Shrug

I am wondering why no one is commenting on the option of trading Dumba and keeping Fiala instead? If 7.8m it was to keep him, that move could have done it and probably fetched a better return for a player that would be hard to keep after next season anyways...

Anything I missed on that option??

I'm surprised OTT of all teams couldn't offer something better.

LA definitely got better today, MIN did pretty well getting that return.

Fair deal.

Cause Petry and Fiala are the same player??! Weird to jump in here with that inferiority complex. And, virtually no one has said they'll get two 1st rounders for Petry

Fair deal, I think Faber is quite a good prospect, the 1st may be semi-late but still, I think this is a good deal for both sides.

I commented on this.

They have to budget their active players roughly 15M below the cap ceiling for the next 3 season due to dead cap. They already have a star winger who costs 9M. On top of that, they have a second 1st line winger in Zucc' who is at 6M. It would not be viable to spend 23 million on wingers when they have a 68-70 million spending limit.

Kaprizov has a NMC, Zucc' has a limited NTC and doesn't make sense to move because he costs 2M less than Fiala and is playing well above his 6M cap hit.

Teams don't build around wingers. It would be one thing if they didn't have any other game breakers, but they do.

Fair deal ... leaning towards LAK unless both Faber and draft pick amount to point a game player at which time, shifts back to Minn, due to the loss of the ELC. Curious though, what does Minnesota see in 2 first round picks approx 19th and 24th.... ????

Not bad for MIN. Faber being from MN shouldn't have had any bearing on this trade, but it seems like it did. I do believe MIN could've and should've gotten more, but given that we couldn't keep Fiala, this is still a fine package in a vacuum.

i think the fact he had such a good season this year increased his return. who was the last winger who got that much return? faber is a hell of a good prospect.

Almost every Montreal ACGM has them trading Petry for Bourque or equivalent prospect + 18th ovr. If Fiala goes for B+ prospect + 19th ovr there's zero chance of that happening.

We have $6.5 million in cap room right now to re-sign Middleton, add a goalie (Guerin wants Flower), add a depth forward, and have an injury cushion. We would have needed to move more than just Dumba to be able to afford Fiala this year. Next year we need to have enough room for Boldy's bridge deal and compensate for an extra $2 million in dead cap. Even if Guerin were able to somehow make it work this year, it would take massive cap gymnastics and likely more trades the next 2 years to make it work. We'd basically be dismantling the roster to save him. Instead we move 1 player and get to keep the rest of the group intact with a tight cap situation.

Without the buyouts, Fiala would have been gone last year anyway. The buyouts bought us 1 more year of Fiala. Kevin has been playing here on borrowed time. It's been clear for a while that this day was coming, it was just a matter of when as opposed to if.

Wasn't Faber 100% untouchable? Not a knock on anyone, just curious about what those Kings fans think of the deal.

He was before he decided to play another year of college hockey.
