LAK Summer of 2021

Description
Last summer, the Kings took some big strides to start putting the "build" in their rebuild. They addressed two major holes in their forward lineup by signing a top 6 forward with playoff experience in free agency (Danault/Burakovsky) and trading some picks for a top 9 forward under team control for 3 seasons (Arvidsson/Yamamoto). They also brought in a towering defenseman (Edler/Gudbranson) to stabilize the young and developing d-core.

I used this as a template for what the Ducks could do this offseason to accelerate their rebuild.

Arvidsson was supposed to be a top 6 guy...they were after 2 and got him.

Maybe the Oilers would give Puljujarvi instead in a trade like that assuming they are doing this trade to retain Kane

I absolutely think that it's the right time to start adding some guys with term, but that Bura contract scares the poop out of me. I don't think I'm moving a 2nd and 3rd for Yams+Kassian though. Basically just allowing Edmonton to upgrade their lineup (or keep Kane), by paying for Kassian.

Noted. I'm sure if this were to happen, Yamamoto would find himself in the top 6 way more often than not. I just think that line would be fun to watch.

I wouldn't mind Puljujarvi either, I've just seen a ton of trades for him on here and wanted to try something different. Plus it seems Verbeek wants to play a faster, more dynamic brand of hockey.

I just figured that's what it would take to get a guy like Bura in Anaheim with the state of their rebuild and their state tax situation.

I probably overpaid, but it's a trade to a division rival so I did what it would likely take to get the guy (Yamo).

They could always move Kassian else and moving Barrie as well would allow them to keep Kane, if Kane gets returned to SJ, that makes things easier for the Oilers to trade for him and lose some cap.

So can't play hardball too much.

Tough to say. It depends on the season he has in 22-23. He's still adjusting and finding his role. If all goes well, I could see a Dahlin 3X6 (maybe a little less). If he takes off into the stratosphere this year, we're looking at an 8-year deal in the high 6's (maybe 6.75, even 7)

Instead of adding Burakovsky, if I were Verbeek, I would extend all. The RFAs who don't look like busts to mid-long term deals as cheap as possible. Then I would play they as far up the line as possible. Would also sign Dylan Strome and Kubalik if they hit free agency and don't cost too much to sign for 1-2 year deals.

Pretty sure he's going to lock Manson or at least bring him back for 4-5 years.

Probably best to lock Zegras, Terry, and Drysdale asap before they take off. I'm guessing Zegras could get the Ana version of the Hughes signing and Terry would come in under by a bit.

Looks like 8.5m is close enough to 8m in NJ

I agree that it's going to take an overpay to get a UFA in, and I don't neccesarily think that Bura isn't the right guy, it just scares me hahaha.

LOL I don't blame you. It would be high risk/ high reward. The Danault signing scared Kings fans too, but they aren't complaining now.

Yeah, I'm just curious to see the direction the GMPV goes in...*IF* he decides to move Gibby (I really don't think it's a thing), then it would likely signal 1 more year of collecting assets.

Yeah I hope that isn't the case. The Ducks already have one of the best prospect pools in the league and are coming off 4 awful years and trading Gibson would set the rebuild back 2-3 years. It would have to be a massive overpay from someone desperate. I'd like Verbeek to take some steps forward like the Rangers, Devils, and Kings have done recently.

Would they? It still seems like one of the RFA's has to go if they want to re-sign Kane, add depth, and address their goaltending situation.

The more I think about it the more I like the idea of Kassian on the fourth line, but I don't like the overall structure of that trade. Just not a big fan of Yamo I guess.

Burakovsky would be a great add, but I just doubt that a guy from the 2nd tier of free agents is going to be willing to sign in Anaheim even for a boat load of money. I've turned my eye more towards Mikheyev for that roster spot. He's more of a 3rd tier option so cheaper and less in demand (maybe?).

This season. Ignoring that the savings drop to 1.3M next season and then you get a cap hit of 1M for two more years beyond the contract term. Sure that league cap is going to go up to counter act that year 3 and 4 number but I'm still not convinced a Kassian buyout is the smartest idea.

I wouldn’t mind Yamo or Puljujarvi. They’re about equal in my eyes, they just bring different skill sets to the table.

I guess in this scenario, Burakovsky would take the payday because he’s won his 2 cups now and would be looking to be a centerpiece of a team that has traditionally treated Swedes well.

I like Mikheyev a lot, but I might consider him 3rd tier and would likely play a middle 6 role instead of a top 6

Why thank you. I don’t necessarily agree with all of them either, I’ve just been having fun using other team’s rebuild templates to see how the Ducks can transition from the “tear it down” phase to the “build it up” phase of the rebuild.

No complaint from me if that ends up happening with Burakovsky. With Mikheyev the question is how well he plays on a 2nd line when he's not buried lower because of guys above him. My hope for him is that he'd take a nice step forward offensively if given the chance. More ice time, power play time, offensively minded line mates, etc. Either way he's kind of backup plan of sorts.
