Description
Keep Shattenkirk til TDL, then move for picks. I would probably do the same with Comtois, no point moving him now with his value so low.

Why in the world would we trade a perfectly good backup goalie for a stab-in-the-dark draft pick? What's the urgency? What's the incentive?

Stolarz' stats were better than 90% of the backup goalies in the NHL this season. And we might want to re-sign him at the end of this campaign, which would effectively be impossible if we trade him.

Without getting all crazy, Stolarz is worth far more than a late round 5th. I think WPG 3rd for Toronto is probably better.

Kalgren for all the Toronto hype is a 25 yr old 7th round pick, who at 3.31 GAA and an 88% save percentage is not a backup on a quality contender. Toronto would be crazy not to offer the WPG 3rd for him, dependent on who their starter is.

But I like the ideas. Barrie and Holtby are nice pickups as the team gives youth time

Im a Flyers fan and I love stolie. Hope it didn’t come off as that he sucks. Hammer wise under you noted he could probably get more, simialr to Vladar getting a 3rd. That is fair, I tend to be conservative with returns with goalies because it seems what people think they’re worth is very fluid.

My reasoning was mostly this: the Ducks have Dostal that’s super close to being ready if not already. I wanted to just have him as the backup, but also as a Flyers fan, no reason to rush them. I guess to me it was « sell high on Stolarz’s great year » because why not get more assets in a deep draft when you have a legit starting goalie (Gibson), the blue chip (Dostal), and a goalie who could turn into something legit (Clang). The second primary motivation was the cap floor which they were not close to with just Stolarz and I didn’t feel like a superfluous signing like Gaudreau or Klingberg was either smart or logical. Holtby made a lot more sense and also had a good year as a backup. You can ride him out and if they have a good year he has good playoff experience if Gibson is hurt or struggles, if the year is more rebuilding you trade him (or Gibson) and bring up Dostal.

You may have just missed a possible quality deal. PHI has 2 ready now quality goalies who need NHL time in Fedotov and Sandstrom, both who had very good years last year, and playing behind Gibson is probably a bit more sheltered than behind Carter Hart. I wonder if PHI would consider looking at their biggest areas of need (LW and C) and be interested in Comtois or Steel?

Or one of Fedotov or Sandstrom AND a 7mil JVR for some kind of deal?

No point to deal Stolarz for so little and no reason to bring in at all, especially at that price

Contracts are all fine though, love the Marchment singing (would like cheaper but probably a bidding war)

Don’t deal Comtois at all!! Shattenkirk I’d be fine with dealing right now if someone like the Stars wanted him to replace Klingberg looking something like Shattenkirk 50% retained for Khudobin (cap dump) and like a 2nd in 2024 then we can over pay on a RD for a year in FA

Needed to hit the cap floor also, Barrie and Holtby help with that. I agreed with Hammeriwse above that Stolarz can probably get you more like a third, that’s my own bias of going lower on return for goalies since it’s such a volatile trade value for them.

The reasoning is sound, but "sell high" and "get a 5th round pick" are pretty much opposites.

A 3rd might be equal value to Stolarz in a vacuum but we can't look at players in this era of hockey simply by what they do on the ice. The contract tied to that player is equally important. In this case Stolarz is essentially the best value backup in the league when you look at a results per cap ratio. He makes less than 50% the going rate of a backup (2 to 2.5 million). He makes 2.8 million less than Mrazek and is a far, far better goalie.

If Toronto isn't giving up a 2nd to get Stolarz and an extra 1-1.5M of cap space (above an average backup) to spend elsewhere on their roster then the Ducks just keep him. With Stolarz we can get to the cap floor by taking a bad contract from some other team with a 2nd as a sweetener.

Youre really harping on thé 5th when I’ve stated that it was just an idea for a pick because regardless of all the talk here none of us are GMs. Would you have signed Seth Jones to 9.5million in a flat cap world? An NHL GM did. Don’t act all high and mighty

That looks like a rough trade for Anaheim. Remove the retention on Shattenkirk and move the pick to 2023 and I'd be fine with it. Regardless, I'd rather keep Shattenkirk until the TDL. He'll have higher value then than he does now in the summer most likely.

And yet here we are pretending to be just that, kind of the whole point of this site. There was nothing high and mighty about my post. It was a bad trade proposal and multiple people told you so, that's all.

Actually what Hammerwise said was « I think they could get a third » in a pretty respectful way. They didn’t talk to me about numbers and finance like I was brain dead. Hammer wise comments on a lot of my posts and is a chill person. You are acting like you can be a smug faux gm as if you know what’s going on inside their war rooms.

Should I have simply posted: no a 2nd is the proper value for Stolarz. Or the even better canned reponse: ANA declines.

With the details I added now you know exactly why I think a 2nd is the proper value. You are free to disagree and reply back with your reasoning on why a 3rd (or a 5th) is indeed correct. We're having a discussion here to pass the summer.
