No way is Detroit taking on Sean Monahan for free, Need to add at least a 3rd round pick on top. He's coming off back to back hip surgeries.

Oilers are an easy no. Pulijiarvi is only getting traded if a goalie of status of a legit 1A starter, then you can take his name out of it.

What makes you think he’s worth that? Jesse will be traded no matter what. Oilers cannot afford to bring him back, he’s going to cost at least $3.5m and he had an underwhelming year.

There’s like a 80% chance they pay to move him.

Based on what?

I don’t think it’s in CGY’s best interest to experiment on whether or not he returns to form next season. It’s a crucial offseason, not only when it comes to keeping the healthy/productive core together but to maximize the roster with healthy players that would fill out the roster and have a specific role.

Monahan has no value on the trade market (you seem to disagree with that), but when you’re coming off a major injury and it’s apparent that you either haven’t been able to return to form or may not in the foreseeable future, you have some options: you can either wait and see if he does or trade his contract to another team with an equally bad contract (neither of these scenarios seem very advantageous), or you can rid yourself of his $6m salary and open up a roster spot.

I think he’s moved along with a 2nd round pick and the Flames go and sign two free agents with that money.

I’m not sure what their needs are specifically but if you can go and pick up a guy like Josh Manson at $4m and then maybe a Max Domi on a 1-year $3m deal; I mean wouldn’t you rather have that than a question mark in Monahan?

Ill start with the bolded, I don't see why not. Calgary can move Lucic and basically run it back with the exact same roster minus just Lucic and Zadorov. But also add Pelletier and one of Valimaki/Mackey. So realistically a net neutral change.

They were still a top team in the league last year when Monahan played injured. What do they loose by betting on him reforming? Worst case he just sucks and they can invest at the deadline for an upgrade. Mid case he can't play and is placed on LTIR thus opening up cap space, best case he is at least Seguin (who also had hip replacement surgery last year) caliber or better and Calgary has a really solid top 9. Like I can't understand the logic behind paying to move Monahan based on "uncertainty" when him coming back is not a downgrade by any way from last year.

You keep trying to say Monahan has no value, why is that? He scored 20+ goals in 7/9 seasons of his career playing 1st line center, the only 2 seasons he didn't he was clearly effected by a major injury. He is an excellent team leader and mentor. GM's tend to have much better memories than the goldfish on this site.

Manson is certainly not a need, he would be 3rd pair on Calgary as soon as Tanev comes back in (at latest) November. Domi is literally the same caliber player as injured Monahan but bad at center, he would also be a horrible pick up. The only logical targets if Monahan were to be traded are Trocheck and Kadri. Neither would sign with the Flames though as Trocheck would likely rather sign with an American team and Kadri already refused to go to Calgary.

The one option you aren't considering which is actually possible is trading Monahan + assets to acquire an upgrade. Some names that come to mind for that are; Scheifele, Dubois, Miller, Toews, and possibly Larkin

Monahan has negative value when considering his cap hit, his past 2 seasons, his 2 major injuries, and the fact that Calgary will not be able to keep their key FAs without freeing up cap space. Nobody is going to pay for 2018 Monahan in 2022.

No, he has very little value. Lucic has negative value because he is a 5.25M 4th liner

And at this point in his career, Monohan is a 6.37M 3rd liner at best. Could he bounce back? Potentially. Is anyone willing to bet assets on it? Remains to be seen but highly doubtful

Why do you say that? Because he played like a 3rd liner when injured?

No, because we live in 2022 and Monahan has not been a top 6 player in 3 years. If you’re valuing guys at what they used to be, Detroit will give you DeKeyser for a 1st

19/20-48 pts in 70 games
20/21- 28 pts in 50 games
22/23- 23 pts in 65 games

3 years of not worth 6M in cap space. That’s not a trend that you trade assets for. Then add in the major injuries and yeah, he’s not a top 6 player RIGHT NOW and is very much not with his current cap hit.

The DeKeyser for a 1st offer still stands. He was a solid D man before he got hurt a couple of years ago so he’ll probably bounce back and is worth the pick.

48 points in 70 games is a 56 point pace. That's right in line with his career average before that. Why people look at 18/19 and act like that is his average is beyond me.

How was he not worth 6M in 19/20? Here's a list of all players making ~6M and aren't widely considered underpaid: B. Schenn, Kreider, Reinhart, Larkin, Hall, Nelson, J. Staal, Zuccarello, Ehlers, W. Karlsson, Atkinson, Schmaltz, Oshie, and Mantha. How does Monahan not fit in that group?

Again, that 48 points was 3 years and 2 major surgeries ago so it’s fair to say he’s not the same player.

How does he not fit in that group? Because his numbers have gotten worse in each of the past 3 years. He’s coming off of major surgeries, and has shown that he can’t stay healthy this decade.

But DeKeyser for a 1st and you have a deal.

No it's fair to say we haven't seen him play healthy in 2 seasons, since he put up those 48 points. You keep ignoring that fact.

You keep regurgitating the exact same arguments in slightly different sentences. How was 19/20 a "gotten worse" season when he paced his career average. How was he not worth 6M that season?
B. schenn - 58 points 71 games
Kreider - 45 points 63 games
Reinhart - 50 points 69 games
Larkin - 53 points 71 games
Hall - 52 points 65 games
Nelson - 54 points 68 games
Zuccarello - 37 points 65 games
Ehlers - 58 points 71 games
W. Karlsson - 46 points 63 games
Atkinson - 26 points 44 games
Schmaltz - 45 points 70 games
Oshie - 49 points 69 games
Mantha - 38 points 43 games.

Again explain to me how Monahan isn't worth 6M there but all those players are.

You keep saying we haven’t seen him play healthy in 3 years but that in itself is the problem. Teams don’t want a 6M cap hit who only plays 15-20 games
