Brown with retention might get OTT a 1st round pick, without sending back a 3rd. They don't gain much here.

They get Kase who produced better P/60 than Brown and a 25-32nd overall pick and give up like pick 85

Produced better than a .62PPG scorer who has the longest goal screak in Sens history while also being there most heavilied used forward and gets almost no powerplay time versus a guy that was a staple on the 2nd PP?

Kase also has a tremendous injury history and is one hit away from a career ending injury so you have to include a better player than him. Kase also has a way smaller sample size that you're looking at.

If you want Kase's p/60, then don't trade him, and offer him a contract. You can get him for less than the $1.8

Brown is the more valuable player. Ottawa doesn't consider this, IMO.

Which is why a first is being added?

Brown got 8 more minutes per game and only produced at a 0.08ppg better clip than Kase. I'm not saying their identical players which is why a first is added in the trade

moving up 2 rounds doesn't offset the difference in player AND salary retention.

Going from ~85 to ~28 in the draft goes from about a 10% chance of drafting a nhler to 50%... pretty important difference for an expiring UFA

Yes it's a good jump up-- but it's not enough with $ retained. Maybe @ the deadline.
