Description
After squaring off against the Oilers in the WCF and watching the evolution of the team under Woodcroft; here are a few ideas that I would use to get Edmonton over the hump.
Moving Tyson Barrie and signing bridge deals for Puljujarvi/Yamamoto are the only way to make it work. No way to re-sign Evander Kane or any other big name UFA. Kulak and the other UFA I didn't sign just aren't worth much.
There are not enough draft picks or cap space to even think about offer sheets but gaining one back in the Tyson Barrie deal helps with the trade deadline options.
Another $2 million opens up next year from buyouts/dead cap but that needs to be re-invested in Stuart Skinner or other goaltending.
I signed Holtby to a 2 year deal to be 1B to Mike Smith and an injury hedge as well as Cup-winning mentor to Skinner going into next year as well. If Skinner can beat him out then great, but if not then I feel as good about that as I do with Smith in the net.
Duncan Keith's contract expires right when Evan Bouchard hits RFA.
Extending Ryan McLeod to his UFA years was a big priority; he was a very effective forward in our playoff series.
Adding Chychrun, Namestnikov, Larsson, and Hakanpaa (while also pushing Keith to 3rd line duty) improves the overall team defense. With Bouchard's development and the addition of Chychrun the defense will be more skilled at activating the play while remaining defensively sound. Chychrun's arrival also helps Nurse more than anyone else; as he can focus on the shutdown role; ease of all the hard minutes and probably stay healthy for another deep run.
If Marody, Holloway, or Broberg push for roster spots then all the better, but I'm keeping them in the back pocket for now.

Détails additionnels:
This is both a salary dump (Kassian) and blockbuster trade for Chychrun. To eat $3.2 in cap space is expensive; so is acquiring a high end two-way defenseman.

These are definitely the type of moves I think the Oilers need to make. I wonder if they'd rather prioritize a goaltending solution over trading for Chychrun, since it's assumed Nurse will be much better if he isn't playing through the injury. They definitely need both but I think Bouchard will take on more minutes and a goalie would be a better investment. But this still moves the needle for them a lot

Personally as an Oilers fan I would not go for the Chychrun trade. I used to want Chycrun a lot, but to give up that many futures is not a great idea. I would rather sign Kulak or someone else in his place.

All good stuff, but I really think Smith retires. Holland will go hard after Husso and Skinner will be fulltime backup. They wont do that Chychrun trade and will just resign Kulak. But agreed that Keith should be pushed down to 3rd pairing minutes. Also Woodcroft is big on Malone so he will may be a 4th line regular over Shore.

Agree with this. I’d keep the assets and sign a slightly cheaper option and upgrade on Holtby.

Curious, where do you get the extra $3-4 million per year to land a goalie like Husso?

Kulak is still going to cost close to Chychrun's AAV on a deal; at least according to most sources out there on the internet.

Stars say no. Hakanpaa is the only RHD on the Stars roster so trading him even for another RHD wouldn't be smart. Also don't think a defensive team like Dallas would give up a stay at home defenseman and 2nd round pick for a D-man who can't play defense. If it was a 3rd or 4th and mid-level prospect I think the Stars would accept

I think Smith will retire, that frees up $2.2mill, i also think they trade Foegle and probably wont sign McLeod for 4 yrs(even tho i think they should) so he will probably come in more around 2x $950k-1mill. More could be done to save cap in the bottom 6 as well. Ryan was good this past season but i think if they could bring in a guy like Gagner who would cost less why not trade Ryan for like a 4th rnd pick? Gags would serve the same role as Ryan and would do it for less if they gave him a little term... say 3x850k... hes also 3 yrs younger than Ryan. I think Kulak would sign a 4x$2.25 deal. And if they do manage to sign Husso at maybe 4x$3.5mill running Skinner as your backup instead of signing Holtby also saves $1.2 mill.

Yes its tight. But Holland gets paid alot of money to figure it the F out.
