Even the widely agreed upon 3rd might end up being more than the Penguins get. There was a report out of Pittsburgh just a couple days ago that they might be looking to dump him for nothing, just to clear the cap and open a spot for POJ.

I think this is fair value for Middleton, but I think MN declines. He’s worth more to MN than to other teams. We really liked him on our top pair with Spurgeon. He adds much needed size and toughness with Spurgeon’s.

I'm intrigued by this proposal. It has some interesting results rather just make it a 23 2ns instaed of 24 conditional 1/2, but this could be done.

If that is the case then Yzerman should do it immediately.

We'd rather have Kupari than Kapanen. I have no strong feelings about Matheson vs the second, but I hope we would do than only when our other efforts have failed.

*2nd pair*

Brodin-Dumba is definitely the top pair.

That’s not how Russo describes it. He’s mentioned Spurgeon as the top line D many times.

This depth chart also shows Spurgeon on the top pair.

Then Russo must be an idiot or have some underlying motive to say that.

EV/TOI:
#1 Dumba 19:21
#2 Brodin 19:17
...
...
#5 Spurgeon 16:07

TOI/GP
#1 Brodin 23:26
#2 Dumba 23:06
#3 Spurgeon 21:09 (gap narrows because Spurgeon gets almost double the amount of power play time than Brodin/Dumba)

If Spurgeon represents the top pair, then why do Brodin/Dumba play more?

Didn’t realize you thought Russo was an idiot. But it’s Because they are our shutdown pair. They play against other teams top scorers, that’s because of Brodin though, not Dumba.

Spurgeon is our best defenseman. It’s probably a lot to do with his size and injury history. Maybe lower minutes to help him stay healthy over the season. That makes sense.

If he's saying that Spurgeon represents the top pair, then yes I think he is an idiot. Even worse is if people think Middleton is a top pair defender. 26 year old defenders that are considered "top pair" don't have contract extension projections of 2-3 years $2M AAV.

To help him stay healthy? The guy STILL missed 17 games this year.

#1 Brodin 54.36%
#2 Dumba 53.34%
#3 Spurgeon 52.43%

Even worse...

Dumba 45.28%
Brodin 44.82%

“Try” to stay healthy would be my guess. I forget you hate Spurgeon because he’s small though. Middleton was on the top pair with Spurgeon, yes, that’s correct. So salary indicates who deserves top pairing? That’s a poor argument.

Maybe you’re misunderstanding my point, I’m not arguing statistically that Spurgeon and Middleton are our best defensive unit. I’m saying Russo and the media label them the top pair.

I don't hate Spurgeon because he's small. I don't know what gave you that impression. He is an overpaid #2/#3 that we can only hope ages well into his 30s since he has 5 years left on his deal. If he didn't have a NMC, he would be player #1 on the "To Trade" list. I'd definitely rather have Dumba for the next 5 years at $6-6.5M than Spurgeon with his current contract.

Salary projection is an excellent indicator of what a player is worth. Name me one top pair defender that would sign for a cap hit around $2.5M or less that isn't on an ELC. Middleton is not a top pair guy. He's at best a #4/#5 guy.

I don't care who is saying Middleton-Spurgeon is the top pair. It's wrong.

Well, everyone is wrong and you’re right I guess. Maybe some self reflection is in order.

Have a good day.
